Channel out any down stairs that don't have a matching up stair above them, while you still have access to the top floor
confused - i don't have any down stairs that don't have a matching upstairs - as i have 2 matching 5x5 stairs - except for access tunnels i.e  3x5x5x5 on the top and 3x5x5x5 on the bottom - with the missing 2 on each being the access tunnels

do you just mean channel out all the stairs on the lower level and then all the stairs on the upper level?

The down stairs on the upper level, and the up stairs are on the lower level. If you dug out access tunnels to the lower 4x4 room, it's likely that you don't have the wall available to dig an up stairs into. If you leave it, there's a fairly good chance that the miner will either not channel out the down stair (because of lack of access) or go up to the top level and get stuck (due to access being lost while the miner is up top).

If you channel out all the stairs on the lower level, the only way you can channel out the (supporting) down stairs on the upper level is by making your own access. It'll work, but it's a pain in the bum to do.

A screenshot for each level would be helpful -- I'm not sure what you mean by 3x5x5x5.

I know i must be missing very basic/fundamental stuff here but i just can't see what :(

e.g.

Dig down stairs around the edge of the topmost 4x4 room, so that you have a room that's 5x5 with stairs all around the edge. Dig matching up stairs around the edge of the 4x4 room below, so that you have another 5x5 room. But i can't dig stairs on the lower room where the corridor enters

Channel out any down stairs that don't have a matching up stair above them, while you still have access to the top floor. Once that's done and the miners are off the top floor, set the down stairs to be channeled. The miners will do this by standing on the up stairs beneath, meaning they won't get trapped on the platform that used to be a 5x5 room. Don't understand this as i have a corridor to access the upstairs - how are you even digging the room without a corridor.  Also have you got the first bit the right way around i.e.  aren't the 'upstairs' actually BELOW the 'downstairs'?

Then remove the up stairs, which should make the 4x4 floor area's only support the support you built yourself. Link it to a lever (if you haven't done so already), pull the lever, and the 4x4 floor should fall until it encounters a level with a wall beneath. Each tile of a cave in is treated separately -- if you have half of a level as floor and half as wall, the cave in will stop above the wall and continue above the floor. By remove you mean Channel out?

This is what i have so far - pretty sure its not exactly what you are saying but i'm having trouble following you.

upper level - its not very clear but there is a 5x5 channel in this room

doom chamber (i.e. directly below the pic above)

below doom chamber

my apologies for dragging this out, and thanks once again for your patience

(i'm off to work soon so won't be able to check anything 'in-game' but if its quiet should be able to follow any posts here)

am still interested in best way to do this though

also at seems if the forgotten beast is on the channeled area when the roof drops he will be ok - is this just a risk thats always there or do i need to change the design

thanks

Whoops, yes, it's the up stairs you should be channelling last. Also the expanded area is 6x6 and not 5x5, but you've done that anyway.

d, z. This removes up stairs and also ramps. Channelling works too (because it'll also remove the up stairs along with the floor), but is unecessary.

An FB can still survive if it isn't directly beneath any of the tiles you're dropping. You can cut off most of the safe area by flooring over the channels on level 137 and putting raising bridges in. This cuts off access to all but one entrance tile, but without supporting the floor resting on the support. You could also provide some bait -- FBs will happily smash any floor hatches they encounter, and if you put a couple on the floor well away from the entrance the FB should stand in the drop area while it breaks the hatches apart.
