Happy Birthday Tesla
« on: July 10, 2013, 03:48:20 pm »

My boss is kind of a Tesla fanatic, and so he decided to throw a birthday party/promotion for Tesla on his birthday, this week.

What's really awesome though is he commissioned a friend of mine who works here to do a mural across one whole side of the building: http://imgur.com/a/VorvE

So as you're enjoying all the wonders of your modern, electrified life, just remember to give a silent thanks to Tesla for alternating current.

Tesla was great and all, but that mural have more to do with a mystique modern interpretation of the personage than the actual inventor I feel :/ Good art otherwise.

Well, Tesla was into mysticism and that's the angle he took. He felt it made for a more interesting interpretation to view his life and process from a mystical standpoint. (Tesla often said his ideas came to him in dreams.)

That mural is awesome.  I had no idea Tesla invented the Tower of Nod.

You mean this thing? He wanted to build a prototype capable of transmitting power across the atlantic, but never received enough funding to finish construction.

He also predicted the mobile phone:
Quote
"The 'World-System' has resulted from a combination of several original discoveries made by the inventor in the course of long continued research and experimentation. It makes possible not only the instantaneous and precise wireless transmission of any kind of signals, messages or characters, to all parts of the world, but also the inter-connection of the existing telegraph, telephone, and other signal stations without any change in their present equipment. By its means, for instance, a telephone subscriber here may call up and talk to any other subscriber on the Globe. An inexpensive receiver, not bigger than a watch, will enable him to listen anywhere, on land or sea, to a speech delivered or music played in some other place, however distant.

We're going to beat Edison in effigy as a pinata, at the event we're holding. We'll smack 'em until his candy falls out to be gobbled up by children. I think it's a little in poor taste, personally, but also funny.

It is in poor taste, though. If they're going to be historically accurate the Edison effigy should be filled with vitriolic horseshit. Thomas Edison was not the sort of man who would give candy to children, either in the "kindly old man" sense or the "unmarked white van" sense.

A toast to Tesla, folks.
