Found a vampire
« on: July 06, 2013, 02:19:21 pm »

well a peasant was found drained of blood. Thankfully it wasn't one of my master dwarves! After cross referencing the unit list and dwarf therapist, I found a dwarf that had two different names who just happened to have come with the most recent migrants. She had like 5 kids and a whole lot of affiliations. So, I dug out a nice room, filled it with cool (valuable) stuff, sent her in to smooth the stone and walled it up after she went in. Vampires don't eat or drink (booze, anyway) so she shouldn't starve or die of thirst, right? Is there a better way of dealing with her? If she dies there will be a bunch of bad thoughts, i think. Ideas?
Kinda sucks because she was a damn good smith.

Actually, they won't even drink booze. This has the unfortunate side effect of causing their performance to drop after a few months because they are still alcohol dependent.

But they can be locked into a room indefinitely, with no repercussions because of lack of food/drink, they don't actually need to drink blood.

You could make a new burrow that encompasses your entire fort, with exceptions to the sleeping quarters. The vamp will stay within the burrow, ignoring anyone sleeping just outside of it. Though if anyone accidentally falls asleep in the burrow (exhausted, don't have a dormitory/personal room to sleep in, etc.) they will be considered fair game.

This way you can still have your vampire making things for you at the forge. Though, as I mentioned, her goods will eventually be of slightly lower quality because of the lack of alcohol.

Dig a tunnel over the room she's in, then channel a hole in the roof. Set a garbage dump zone on the floor next to the hole, and make sure you have no other garbage dumps active. If possible, make sure she isn't directly under the hole. Mark a pick and an anvil for dumping. Once your dwarves carry them to the edge, they should toss the items into the hole, where they'll land within her reach. Dumping automatically forbids them, so you'll have to unforbid them. Then, you can enable mining on her, and she should grab the pick. Have her dig out some stone and enough space, and she can construct a forge. Use the dump method to drop in materials and have her continue to smith. If you have a tunnel under her room as well, you can have her channel a hole, then use the same method to have her drop items back into the regular fort.

Voila! A still useful, safely contained vampire. Just be careful digging the channels; if they're not into an already-dug room, they'll leave a ramp, and she may be able to escape before you can remove it.

I had a dwarf that turned out to be a vampire, and ended up being elected mayor.  I walled them up in their spacious quarters for a while and assigned them as the bookkeeper.  After a few years, I got bored of this, unwalled their quarters after locking them into one of the rooms in it, then moved a caged magma crab into the room and connected it to a lever.  I locked the outside door, unlocked the inside door between the vampire and the cage, then pulled the lever.  The vampire wandered into the room with the crab, and immediately started getting pelted by basalt.  Unfortunately, after dozens of hits, he was mostly only taking bruises, and spending most of his time running between rooms while the crab chased him.  Once or twice, the vampire would stop to grab the crab, and tore off a leg once.  I decided to confine the vampire and the magma crab to the same room, and the vampire started to take more and more hits from the basalt the crab was spitting at it.  Finally, the vampire had a tantrum and proceeded to tear the crab apart, killing it in short order.  By this time the vampire had accumulated quite a good number of wounds, although nothing immediately life threatening.  But about a minute after the magma crab died, the vampire had apparently had enough, and went berserk.  Since he was now targetable to my military, I sent multiple squads to wait outside his door, then once a suitable number had amassed, opened the door and sent them in.  The vampire fell pretty quickly after some taking some nice hits from my military, including getting two limbs cut off by an artifact adamantium axe.  I was concerned briefly because there were various body parts strewn throughout the room, with a different name than the vampire.  I feared that the vampire had torn one of the dwarves asunder, until I realized that upon his death, the vampire's true identity had been revealed.  He was given a proper burial, to hopefully avoid any further problems from him, and his quarters were assigned to the new bookkeeper.
