military reverts to old "look" when out of combat
« on: July 08, 2013, 10:02:01 am »

Im trying to build a full time military. My dwarves keep reverting to their other professions when out of combat though

Despite them being higher level in Axe or Shortsword than mining

Do they preserve their military status once they reach a higher level with a type of weapon?

They also seem to drop armor wherever they stand when dismissed.

How can i keep my military suited up and looking "militaryish"?

They only get their military title when they are active in the military; simply being in a squad is not enough.

To make them continuously active in the military, you can assign the squad a training schedule that keeps all of the dwarves training at all times (they'll still walk away to eat, drink and sleep).  Of course, then they won't do any civilian jobs.

To make them stay armored when inactive, go into the military schedule screen and set "inactive" to "uniformed" for every month.  (Though I think that's the default anyway...)

Another thing that can cause them to drop everything when inactive is having the mining, woodcutting or hunting labors enabled - those have hard-coded uniforms of their own that tend to conflict with military uniforms.

Also, go to military->alerts and set every squad to "active/training" with enter. Then make sure that they are scheluded to train and they have barracks and you've set they to train at the barracks (q->barracks->squadname->t).

You can give them custom profession titles (v z y p keys if memory serves, but you'd better double check), but that's just cosmetic.

Normally, their displayed title indicates whether they are on- or off-duty, and what their relevant skills are.  If they're off-duty (civilian), then their title is based on their civilian skill set.  It could be something like "Planter" if they're really good at planting, or "Farmer" if they're good at a bunch of farming-category skills with no single skill outstanding.  If they don't have any civilian skills at Novice or higher, they show as Peasant.

If they're on-duty (military), then their title is based on their highest weapon skill.  If they have Novice level axe skill and Adequate level spear skill, they show as a Speardwarf, regardless of what weapon they may be holding, or assigned.  If they don't have any weapon skills at Novice or higher, they show as Recruit.
