Most of my Dwarves are taller than average humans?!
« on: July 06, 2013, 01:28:13 pm »

Awhile back I reported that I noted in my current game the majority of my Dwarves are described as being "tall". Until VerdantSF directed me to Urist McDwarfFortress' spiffy maxblood script I assumed that it just meant they were tall for Dwarves. But using the script I've discovered that a large proportion of my population seems to have a size over 70000. Which is average height for a Human, while Dwarves average 60000. The tallest Dwarf I checked, is 75000!

I double checked the raws and indeed they are unmodified and still are set to be 60000 average. I guess I should start making/buying some of the larger weapons to diversify my military.

Quite strange, but very cool and something I've never seen before.

Kill them. They aren't worthy of the fortress.

That's not height, it's volume! Your dwarves are probably just fat.

Body size is based on creature volume, and so is blood content.

But they'll be better fighters and should presumably be able to wear human armor.. But... What happens when I make armor at my forges?? Who does it fit??  ???

I was told to multiply the maxblood by 10 to get the creature size in square centimeters, which I believe is what the wiki/game raws creature size number represents. But is there really a "height" in this game? From what I see volume is itself pretty much the only thing that establishes the size of creatures. I presume when it says a creature is tall, that means a certain amount higher than what is average for that race as specified in the RAWs.

I guess I should start making/buying some of the larger weapons to diversify my military.

NB. There is a known bug where in fortress mode, which weapons are equippable is dependent upon average racial size, not on individual size. So even though your dwarves are human-sized, they will be unable to equip large weapons.

Double vs single-grasp for equippable weapons is calculated correctly, however.

Good to know, I imagine that's why I now recall still seeing the "large" modifier on the human trade goods. And I that should answer my question about what size of armor is being forged.

Yes, "tall" is just relative to the racial average. Creature size is in cubic centimeters. There is a relative height number calculated behind the scenes in DF, but it is just the cube root of the volume, and I don't know if any calculations even use it.

Height and broadness do affect size, but not for equip calculations as mentioned (it's a known bug)

They will be able to heft one-handed some weapons that are normally two-handed though.  As I recall, dwarves above 60000 can one-hand anything they can equip (as nothing with a multigrasp above 60000 does not also have a min-size of 60000), which will include flails, long swords, and morningstars out of the foreign weapons.

The 'unequippable' weapons for dwarves are 2-handed swords, great axes, halberds, pikes, and mauls.  This CAN be corrected, even mid-game, simply by going into the raws for your save and tweaking the minimum size from 62500 to 60000.  At that point your dwarves will be able to wield them, and particularly large dwarves (any that make it above the massive-for-a-dwarf 77500) will be able to do so in one hand.

Also make sure you have the fix for fortress-born dwarves not growing properly.  It's a pretty simple little DFhack script.

Heresy. The dwarf is assumed to be a perfect cube.
