So the game has been released on Steam and seems to be pretty decent. It actually plays a lot like a sci-fi version of Dungeons of Dredmore.

I played a few hours of it yesterday and it's a lot of fun, though I have no idea what the labs are for as I have found no resource which lists what the various components can do.

In order to use labs, you must a) experiment with various ingredients, b) decrypt messages from computer consoles or c) find spoilers online. Weirdly, all kinds of biological stuff, like injections and medicine, are done with a cooker isntead of a lab.

This is a fun game, but it doesn't really offer a lot more compared to free roguelikes. I need to play it a little more, but I don't know if there is really a point to buy it compared to free ones.

I tried the demo today. It seems like a very well done roguelike from what I saw. I recommend giving the demo a try. I found the easiest way to try the demo was to do a steam store search for The Pit, both the full and demo versions will result. I downloaded it while piddling about.

For some reason it vaguely reminds me of Fallout 1, except a different setting and a roguelike with you stranded in the dungeon. I mean that in a good way.

What it offered me compared to other roguelikes was being a good blend of features and good ui in something new. Plus I happen to like SotS both 1 and 2.

Demo lets you play until you reach a certain level or depth; I died on normal of poison before that could happen and will demo again shortly if PS2 is not finished patching the new patch.

EDIT: Make sure you do the tutorial first. It'll show you some interesting stuff, including the differences between weapon types. It also warns you about trapped doors. I should have done the tutorial first.

Some notes:

Hover over a door before you go through if they have a symbol on them; that means it is trapped.

Poison trap was the only thing truly dangerous I encountered on normal before dieing to the second poison trap I found. Utilizing a health kit at the last second is a bad idea as it takes multiple turns. Anti-venom didn't do anything before I ran out of the two at start but maybe I was unlucky. EDIT: I was unlucky. Try two resulted in level 3 poison cured first attempt.

Sounds were good. Reaction speech seems good, Engineer said 'One and Done' when I one shot a rat with the pistol and 'That's not good...' when he was at low hp and about to die for example. Sometimes though I had to wonder who he was speaking to when he opened stuff. It was less celebratory and more explanatory. Perhaps that lady in the backstory over a communication device. Perhaps just does that or does not matter.

Items and enemies have a short entry in the in game SotSpedia which is nice.

One of the enemies was a zuul infant swarm; though you could kill it with one bullet.

Stats are tracked and when you die it shows them by a per weapon and per enemy basis.

EDIT2: Second try on the difficulty above normal ended quite quickly on the second floor with me being exploded by a crazed human who threw a grenade at me. I thought maybe you were supposed to talk to him as I hadn't seen any humans on normal. I had plenty of time to kill it, I just chose not to. I'll definitely give it another few play through later until I manage to actually hit the demo limit.

So... keep your eye out for 'trapped' doors you have not yet identified. Apparently door traps can have many different effects picked at random, one of which can be to heal you. I survived a ridiculous number of fights I wouldn't have otherwise because I found a door which will heal me every 20 turns or so when I walk through.

Blind traps killed me more than a few times till I did the tutorial and worked out how to target.

Anyone know what boobytrapping stuff does?

Boobytrapped furniture explodes when an enemy wanders nearby. It as well removes function from the item so, for example, you can disable a bot manufactory that way while turning it into a mine against the critters.
