Where are my slabs?!?
« on: July 04, 2013, 02:19:25 pm »

I have a ghost that needs to be put to rest. That takes a memorial slab. Very well, I had the manager order a slab made, then when she was done I went to the Craftsdwarf's workshop and asked it to engrave a slab to the deceased. The craftsdwarf canceled the task: "Needs unengraved slab." Did that slab not get made? Lather rinse repeat. I am accumulating slabs (the inventory screen says I have like 8 not in use), they are being stored in some stockpile that doesn't have permission to give slabs to that craftsdwarf's workshop, and I have no idea where they are. My settlement has a couple dozen stockpiles.

1. Is there a way to locate a thing without looking for it square by square?

2. What kind of stockpile takes slabs? Finished goods, stone, bars, what?

3. Is there a way to bypass this insane "give and take" system and just give every stockpile permission to give its supplies to any dwarf who needs them?

1. Slabs go to furniture stockpiles.

2. You can find objects in the stocks screen, if your bookeeper settings are at maximum.

3. Check stockpile links and burrows, they are probably the culprits.

In a hole in the ground there lived a dwarf. Not a nasty, dirty, wet hole, filled with the ends of worms and an oozy smell, nor yet a dry, bare, sandy hole with nothing in it to sit down on or to eat: it was a dwarf fortress, and that means magma.

Unrestricted access is the default. If you want a stockpile to take only from links, or give exclusively to a workshop, you have to specify that at the individual stockpile or workshop.

I am trying to make chickens lay bees as eggs. So far it only produces a single "Tame Small Creature" when a hen lays bees.
Honestly at the time, I didn't see what could go wrong with crowding 80 military Dwarves into a small room with a necromancer for the purpose of making bacon.

But I can't. In my inventory screen, when I scroll through the list of slabs, the "z" zoom and "v" view keys are disabled. The bookkeeper setting is at maximum.

I've deleted all stockpile links. No dwarves are currently assigned to any burrows. It still cancels the task. Help!!

When in the stocks screen, press tab while looking at your items, and it should expand the list into selectable items that you can (z)oom to.

The dwarf doesn't have to be assigned to the burrow if the workshop and the stockpile are in different ones, it fails.  The usual workaround to that problem is the job manager, however, that doesn't work for engraving slabs.
