Weird Gamecube controller problem?
« on: August 01, 2013, 07:34:44 pm »

So I have a black Gamecube and a Mad Catz controller, and I'm having issues with certain games. I can play Wind Waker and Metroid Prime and the controller works just fine. However, when I try to play Metroid Prime 2 or Twilight Princess, the analog sticks refuse to work. They work absolutely fine in WW and Prime, but they do absolutely nothing in these specific games. I've Google'd it, but apparently I'm the only person who's had this problem to this point. Can anybody shed light on what might be the issue here?

Unfortunately, the issue is likely that the MadCatz controller is dying (their parts are bargain brand, and their soldering is a joke). If you have access to a confirmed working 1st party controller, I'd advise swapping it out for a play session and seeing if it works.

I wish I could be more helpful or specific than that, but what I can say for certain is that the 1 year failure rate for MadCatz controllers among me and my friends is 100%, regardless of system. While I have not personally seen a MadCatz controller lose analog stick function on certain games, I have seen them lose function on a specific button on certain games numerous times.

You could attempt to bring it to a store that does controller repairs, but it would likely be cheaper at this point to purchase a lightly-used 1st party GameCube controller. Honestly, I'm beyond surprised that it's 2013 and you have a working MadCatz controller for the GameCube at all.

Well, it's nice to know that it's probably a controller problem and not a problem with my console or the games in question. I've never seen a controller that worked for some games and not others before this, but at least I'm not going crazy. I'll have to run into town tomorrow and see if the local game shop has 1st-party controllers in good repair.

I have a Mad Katz memory card for my Gamecube, among others.  It works fine for many games, but not Resident Evil 4 for some reason.  That might be related in some way.  I'm inclined to think that the controller is fine, it just reacts differently to different games.

Yeah, of all the different 3rd parties that have made gamecube equipment I've found that MadCatz stuff was pretty much always the worst and broke the fastest.

We had a MadCatz GC controller from a bargain bin somewhere to play Super Smash Brothers Brawl on our Wii (before the console ate the disk). I think one of the sticks broke on it, but it was a more obvious problem.

I have a Mad Catz GC controller. It was a known issue that using it would cause a specific 007 game to crash at the end of the first level. Just that game, nothing else. It blew my mind that a controller could cause that.

In this day and age I would figure it deliberate sabotage by the console/game manufacturer. (Anyone else seen the 3DS patch notes literally THREATENING TO SELFDESTRUCT if you use it with non-Nintendo hard/software? And saying that by accepting you go publicly on record as supporting this policy? And that your games may or may not selfdestruct/refuse to start if you refuse an update?)
...But for older hardware I dunno.
