Huge FPS drops
« on: June 11, 2008, 08:21:00 pm »

I just started a fortress with the intent of getting a good framerate, so it's a small area with no running water or magma. When it started with 7 dwarves I had 100 frames per second but now shortly after discovering the demon pits my fps has dropped to 15. I only have 79 dwarves and all animals have been caged up. Any idea what could be causing this?

Tentacle demons are performing depraved acts on your cpu.

Engraved on the floor is a masterfully designed image of a fortress and a fps, the fortress is striking down the fps.

Seriously though, I would have to assume it has something to do with all the chained/caged humanoids etc down there, but since I've never actually tunnelled into the pits (I normally avoid the last few levels, but for my current fortress my aim is to beat the demons) I wouldn't know.

Could it be demons that are having serious pathing difficulties but are seriously stubborn and won't give up trying?  Just a thought; I've never gotten that far in the game to know precisely what happens.  Nor have I personally encountered any pathing problems that drag down performance, but I have heard of them existing, I believe.  You might check gamelog.txt in the root Dwarf Fortress folder.

Every time I've ever broken into the pits it's dropped my FPS by a good chunk.

It tends to slow down fast fortresses and cripple already-slow ones.

Maybe it's all the stuff burning down there?

its a combination of stuff burning, and an enourmous amount of critters trying to pathfind their way out of there.

Best way is to send in some champions and kill them all. Yields plenty of human and elf bones. Be wary that all dwarves will get a proper burial. even if they are "from the underworld". So you might need a lot of coffins.

Ah, well I discovered the pits by digging a downward staircase above them, which means the demons were not able to exit. Which means their pathfinding was probably going insane.   :(

Well there are lots of indirect ways to do it...
