Examples of surface dorf towns? (LPs etc)
« on: July 05, 2013, 03:08:38 am »

I've found the perfect spot for a hilltop village and I've begun gathering information about surface industry and how to properly protect myself from outside dangers - but I'm at a bit of a loss in terms of building design and city layout.

Does anyone know of an LP (text or video) where the player is building a surface town? Cottages, workshops and such. :)

It depends entirely on what rules you feel like subjecting yourself to.  I've seen a few community games where they tried to create a riverside agrarian feel with families getting their own houses with their workshop of choice inside and basements restricted to 1 level the size of the surface structure for storage and subterranean farming only.  Other mining restricted primarily to pit-quarries.  Defenses composed primarily of a village stockade and militia.

Yeah that was my initial idea - small family houses (2-3 families in each in separate bedrooms) with basements for basic storage and workshop buildings around the town.

If I turn off invasions and tweak the dorf numbers down, I hope to have a decent town before I get swarmed by anything. Building is a lot slower than digging after all.

As for layout, don't be afraid to go into Adventure mode, and see what generated villages are like.

Adventure hamlets aren't laid out with defence in mind and only have simple rectangular houses. You can get a lot fancier with your own designs, not least because there are no strict structural requirements for holding up buildings apart from the basic 'support' chain. As long as it has cardinal-direction connections to the floor, it holds, so a single support on the southern edge of the map can hold up a catwalk spanning the entire embark _and_ the massive tower built on the northern end of the path.

If you don't allow breaking the ground, you'll be quite limited in your building materials, and construction will be quite slow. If you allow (open-pit) quarries, you can build a lot faster and bigger. Depends on what you want, for big fancy castles, quarries for rock blocks are a sensible option; using only surface or surface-sourced building materials doesn't just slow down your construction work, food storage and furniture might compete for the same ressources you need for building; that makes for a good approach when you want a serious economic-based challenge. Shaping the landscape for your needs helps a lot - a moat restricts enemy/wildlife movement very effectively, removing ramps turns easily-traversed slopes and hills into impassable obstacles.

Edit: I hunted down that archived world - some impressions on what can happen if you turn invaders off and go hog wild with quarries, without any kind of overarching plan:

Of course, you can do much more pleasing and impressive stuff if you _do_ have a plan.

If you can find a site with clay and bring at least one stone with you on embark, you can construct a Kiln and set up a clay collection zone. Use the 'Collect Clay' job from the kiln, then either fire it into bricks or just build clay huts out of it. If you're making huts, then you're not only not having to dig for building materials, but your building materials aren't competing with your furniture and food industry for the use of wood.

My sig actually contains a link to a thread where a surface-based challenge is put forth by one Broseph Stalin. The basic idea of the challenge is that your nobles are the ones who own the industries in your fort, and unless your fort has a noble for a given industry, they can't partake. There's no strict rule on which noble enables which industry; that's up to you to decide. You might say that the local sheriff owns the town mine and the related industries, for example, at which point you build a smelter, a forge, and a mason's workshop on property you designate as his, then assign him a couple of 'employees' to dig and work for him. This challenge can be really challenging, and the full details are a bit more complex, so I recommend checking out the first post in the thread. It has the upside of limiting the number of industries you have to focus on at any given time, as well as making often neglected noble positions significantly more valuable.

Does anyone know of an LP (text or video) where the player is building a surface town? Cottages, workshops and such. :)

around a year ago, there was a succession fort called Murderfarmed.
If I remember correctly, they had plenty of FUN; the self-imposed 'rules and modifications' spoiler in the op could be intereseting to you and they also included mods of things like bread and sausages (sadly I can't confirm that this still works, I wanted to include this myself, but too much afk-obligations and also summer).

fake edit: ninja'd, oh well

Thanks for the tips - I've broken ground on a small riverside location. Plenty of clay and surface minerals. I'll probably make a small mine and a quarry and expand from the river outwards organically. :)
