Size Cap?
« on: June 28, 2013, 05:25:53 pm »

Is there a size cap where the game will eventually either overflow or reset to a fixed upper limit?

I ask because, working on a Shadow of the Colossus Megabeast mod, I did some basic calculations using ripped game models and comparison charts, and, as a perfect cube, Valus (not the biggest Colossus by any means) is a staggering size 3,472,875,000 (2100 cm x 1575 cm x 1050 cm - Size is cm3, right?)

I mean, that can probably be trimmed down to account for contours (obviously Valus doesn't have exactly the same volume as a Valus-sized rectangular prism) but even so, that's utterly massive.  The SMALLEST colossus, Celesia is around 1.5x the size of an Orca.

2,147,483,647 is the maximum value.

Well, that sank that idea pretty quickly.

In fairness, Colossi at their sizes would be basically invincible - I doubt a size 3 billion creature would even NOTICE most attacks.

I can probably still include some of the smaller colossi, but there's no way Phalanx or Malus would be viable.

If you don't mind it being a little stupid, you could make it a swarm.

Could be a very large immobile creature that at first breaks apart into several small pieces, that one "hoops" suggestion suggested making its various body parts connected by stuff that vaporizes instantly. Then that creature transforms into a colossus core and animates those broken-off pieces in sequence, transforming them into its size 2 000 000 000 "body parts" which are actually separate castes of a creature (such as "Malus left arm") hopefully contained in the same tile. You can then even give every body part its own set of interactions. One can punch, one can kick, one can shoot flame, one can fire a cloud of dust to throw you away. If you want the body parts to be allied and hostile to the world, making them the same species but different castes and giving that species [CRAZED] should work? Make the swarm creature species a megabeast and name that one for the actual colossus so get quests to kill it.

That's so hoops it's a nine ring circus right there

But it's an interesting thought.

Mostly I'll just hope for an elevated size cap and multi-tile creatures for the proper 'GET ON THE HYDRA'S BACK' experience.

You could make a ridiculous amount of smaller body parts that sever easily and then make the creature release a cloud of dust, hoping to throw those body parts everywhere nearby, and then animate them into colossus parts, for what may with some luck remotely resemble a multi-part creature :D

But something like either of those would also allow you to make it so the player practically has to kill every other part before going for the core.

i feel like having the size be 2 billion rather than 3 billion is not a *terrible* estimate, compared to the alternatives.  A swarm seems to be more than 50% different than a single creature as well :P

alternatively, you could make dwarves and all other creatures proportionally smaller :D

I had actually considered creating a world designed to the scale of Shadow of the Colossus.  If you could do it by removing one zero, I just might - removing two zeroes means basically everything under size 200 becomes vermin-sized, although as long as everything's proportional...
