I have been planning to reclaim my old fortress, overrun by HFS. Just before my last dwarf died there, there was about 50 clowns. It's an forest with untamed wilds, so surviving aboveground won't be a impossible. Do you have any ideas how to effectively reclaim a demon-infested fortress?

HFS is a little bit out of my depth, admittedly, but I might have a couple of solutions if you don't mind potentially defacing part or all of your old fortress.

First thing I would try is creating a weapon trap hallway and then poking into a part of your former fortress, using military dwarves to mop up. I'm not positive how effective it would be, but barring the new entrance you dug to make this plan work it wouldn't damage the contents of your fortress any.

The second thing I would try is to get infested parts of it to collapse, but I'm not sure how to go about doing that because I don't regularly collapse things outside of one-off siege breakers. The advantage to this is that it is potentially the fastest avenue towards reclamation of the two suggestions I have provided.

HFS are trapavoid. I think the only thing you can do is to send in lots of dwarves and hope that they might kill one of them. You could also create a demigod adventurer and clean up the mess personally.

I made a trap once that should be able to deal with those nasty clowns. I don't feel like illustrating it, so I'll just describe it.

It has a ramp leading down to a retracting bridge, perhaps 10 urists in length, suspended over a large pit, with walls on each side. The ramp had a retracting bridge above it to seal the trap below.

The bridge lead to a pressure plate, rigged to be set at 2/7 water. After the pressure plate is any additional bait, and after the bait is a floodgate. Behind the floodgate is a small tower of water (mine was 2 Zs high) set by a pump. When a something broke the floodgate, the water rushed out, pushing enemies into the middle of the bridge. The pressure plate retracted the bridge (and a distant not gate attatched to the "open" bridge acting to seal the trap).

The enemies, and water, would either fall down the pit, and be sealed underground (where you can obsidianize them), or if they are too large, would be sealed on the bridge, where you can pump more water and magma in and obsidianize them.

Something like this might prove useful. I made it as a resettable FB trap. It was pretty fun to see it in action.

The most important thing is to get underground and wall yourself in ASAP. Your starting seven won't be able to fight demons and won't have time for fancy traps. Don't even try to let in migrants unless you're very comfortable doing so. Once you get settled, start working on your demon grinder. Spike traps on repeat work very well. You can use furniture as bait (ideally artifact quality). Wherever you put the spike traps, I would make sure the only entrance to your fortress is upward through a hatch, because building destroyers cannot target a forbidden hatch from below.

Military reclaims can be fun, I vote you give one a try.  Weapons and a little armor for everyone, and a few war dogs.  Go in and take back the fort room-by-room.  Draft every migrant if you survive that long.

I have planned to seal the old fortress off, the entrance is just three tiles wide. It's quick to seal. Then I'll build a "side fort" where I will prepare to the great reclaimation battle.

One time I lost a fort to a forgotten beast, and even though the fortress had been sealed at the time, it was on the surface when I reclaimed.

IOW, if you don't get underground ASAP, I suspect you're going to have a bad time.
