Trade one more time before caravan leaves
« on: June 26, 2013, 01:31:28 pm »

Maybe this has been brought up already. I am not sure. Here is the problem I face.  All too often the caravan leaves just as I am getting ready to trade with them... all the goods go back to where the dwarves found them and I get stuck waiting for the next caravan to come in. I would like to pose a suggestion.

Have it so that the trade screen comes up automatically just before departure (provided the broker is at the depot).  The trading merchant would state something along the lines of "We are just about to leave. If you have any more items to trade or offer, now would be the time." What do you all think?

A good start.

As a permanent measure, I'd rather make it so that you could tag goods as trade goods (much like you can tag them for melting etc.). The bookkeeper will keep a list of those, so when a caravan arrives only two dwarves need to meet the caravan leader: the broker and the bookkeeper. Then you can trade whatever you want as long as they are there, so you don't need to wait for your dwarves to haul half you fortress to the depot, only to have them haul it back because they were three pig tail socks short of finishing when the caravan's timer ran out. Only have them do the hauling after the deal is sealed. The rest of the goods can stay where they are.

I agree whole heartedly and I hope they implement your suggestion first! But I also think it would be a good idea to have that one last chance/reminder to ditch garbage trade goods.

Maybe having a merchant go find your broker and talk to him, forcing him to trade so you don't end up forgetting to trade for some trained elephants

Caravan leader? There's the liaison, if the civ has one and they made it in alive, but the liaison goes to meet with the appropriate noble and doesn't stay with the caravan (which has no official leader). Neither the broker nor the bookkeeper positions are involved in meetings.

You can enter the trade screen as soon as the caravan finishes unloading, though it won't do much good if nothing of yours is in the depot ready for trade. I prefer to do my trading all at once because dwarves hauling stuff to the stockpiles are dwarves who aren't hauling stuff to the depot, but I'll trade goods as they arrive in the depot if I think I'm going to get distracted.

I am trying to make chickens lay bees as eggs. So far it only produces a single "Tame Small Creature" when a hen lays bees.
Honestly at the time, I didn't see what could go wrong with crowding 80 military Dwarves into a small room with a necromancer for the purpose of making bacon.

You guys know there's already a reminder message when a caravan is getting ready to leave, right?

I like to do my trading all at once as well. Hence the idea of a final trade. It seems caravans bring goblins and sieges. I always get distracted.

Yes, I did know and to be honest I don't usually see the message due to all the job cancellation spam I generally have to wade through. But I appreciate your comment because it did give me and idea to check the announcements.txt to see if I could find the caravan departure announcement and put a pause on it... but I can't seem to find it. If it is there all one would need to do is set the game to pause when it would display and that would make this suggestion somewhat obsolete.
