Bug - designated trees randomly un-designating
« on: August 23, 2006, 12:35:00 am »

I wasn't sure I wasn't doing something wrong with this until I saw the same thing being discussed in the Something Awful thread.  I can designate a bunch of trees to chop, go away and do something elsewhere in the game, come back and find that he's chopped about half and the rest aren't designated anymore.  In many cases I can be quite sure it is exactly the same trees that I originally designated that are still stnading there in the same places.  It means having to go back re-designating the same areas over and over.  Any idea why this happens?  Any chance of it stopping?

It might be that the woodcutter was disrupted by an animal and cancelled the task.

I could be wrong.

I get this same thing happening with detailing, though I'm not sure it's exactly related.  It definitely isn't that I get the smoothing done and then wonder why the detailing isn't done as well, because rock can be rough, I'll designate it to be detailed, and then I come back later and it's still rough and not designated.  Or it's smooth, and it doesn't end up getting detailed.

It's definitely not an animal interrupting it, either, because none come near my fortress, and my masons have no reason to go outside, since they don't do anything besides masonry, and don't haul things.

The tree cutting designation fading seems to always happen with trees grown from saplings.

Is this in the most recent version?  It could be an issue with how connectivity worked with saplings that has been resolved as of 101.19d (or even 101.19a maybe).  I have no other leads on this.

This happens because the trees get covered by snow/other effects, I think

Whenever trees change shape/color/status for whatever reason they are undesignated for chopping. You continually have to go through and redesignate trees for chopping when you notice your woodcutters hauling furniture.

Yep, that's what causes it. I also notice that 2nd level detailing on walls only seems to undesignate whenever someone working on it stops halfway.

haven't mass detailed anything lately..

but the way it used to unselect itself (.93/.95) when mass detailing is that once in a while a few tiles will get unassigned (no idea how or why).. when you select them (all) again, and have a bunch of dwarves doing it (in some sort of close proximity) at the same time, you'll notice as soon as 1 dwarf finish their patch, the others down tools and head off to detail somewhere else and their patch is unassigned.

no idea if it's fixed or not
