Local Wildlife Populations

Are wildlife populations predetermined upon embark, or will they develop as time goes on? I just embarked in a tropical forest with a river, and was hoping to train up some war alligators and elephants. However, DFhack says there a grand total of nine elephants and no alligators whatsoever. Can these numbers increase, or are they permanently set?

pretty sure what animal populations are present in a region is determined ipso facto in world gen.  for when your actually playing though i think it just pulls from the table of possibilities and will decide which to spawn.

If you want to know exactly what's around your fort, dfhack has "region-pops list" command.  Now you'll know exactly how many monarch butterflies there are.  Woo.

currently each region has a number of animals decided by world gen. It gets lower as you kill some. It gets higher if more young are born, but that is currently only possible on the map, so highly unlikely. Off-map, everything is static in the current version. If the alligators arn't dead, they're still around and may be back. If you killed them you may have killed the only alligators for that stretch of river and won't see new ones

Groups of one type of animal will usually spawn, run around on the map for a bit and then leave again. Soon after the last one has left a new group will come.
