Moods and other questions.
« on: June 10, 2008, 09:45:00 am »

1) Has anyone experienced moods with small numbers of dwarves? (7-9)

2) Does using reveal muck up the appearance of strange moods?

3) How do you examine items and engravings closely in adventure mode? I've picked up all sorts of decorated weapons and that.

4) Can I just divert a brook off of the edge of the map? I'd like to experiment with this.

Thanks.

1) Yep.  But no moods generally until your first year is over.

2) Probably not.  Reveal does muck some things up though so it's best either to not use it, or to use it and then not save.  Just remember where stuff was.

3) Engravings:  Hit "k" and move over the engraving.  Use +/- to highlight it on the right if required.  Then, hit "enter" and view the thing.
Items: Hit "k" and +/- and enter to find it, as above, or go to it in the stocks screen (z, stocks, tab to show each item).  Anyway, you get a name/value screen here, then press "v" to see a description.  Detailed items have something interestingish here, normal stuff has a description like "This is a gabbro".

4) In a sense.  You can pump one into a pair of walls pointing off map, but you can't really dig out the edge tiles, so not really.  Most you can do is make a minor flood that goes off map.

1. I believe you need around 20 dwarves to get moods, and even then you need a lot of underground squared to be revealed to get them.

2. I... I really don't know.

3. (l)ook, I think. Or the standard k. Hover the cursor over the object, and select the letter corresponding to that object. You should see what you need from there. You don't start with detailed equipment, and equipping has always been a hassle for me. Thus, no clue how to check equipped items.

4. Remember: You can't build on the five or so squares on the edges of the map. If you have a natural small canyon, you could theoretically do it. Else there will be a bit of flooding.

Right, I might have to up the population limit a bit, possibly. I've had a series of forts with 7-9 dwarves and none of them ever got moods, even after several years.

I was asking about adventure mode really, but if it's just look then I need to try harder  :)

As for the brook, bah, I'll have to see if I can't loop it around underground or something.

Or you could just try damming it. Make a temporary separate channel for the water that leads to either the edge of the map or just to a large area. Make sure there are doors/floodgates in the new channel attached to a lever before you mine out the last squares before the water source.

When the original riverbed is dry make some walls/doors/floodgates and close the floodgates for the separate channel. Flow dammed.

Eh. I've had moods happen with an aboveground village (No mining challenge).
So something is not right there.

I think the only limit is the population. You don't have to dig anything up, you just need 20 dwarves. (I usually get a mood immediately on the same migration that gives me the message about supporting a sheriff.)

2. For sure. As long as number of uncovered (naturally) tiles bumps the mood number it should affect someway (you don't "re-uncover tile which are already uncovered and reveal uncovers them in unnatural way, i.e. it doesn't start scripts for magma/underground water).

As for decorated items - view them in your inventory and you should have their description.
To look at engravings, [l]ook at the tile with them and select appropriate letter (i.e.: a. =Smooth Granite Wall=).
