Mysterious Crash - It Is Inevitable, Mr. McAnderson
« on: June 20, 2013, 07:40:42 pm »

I am having these constant, inevitable crashes in one particular fort. Can't, for the life of me, figure out what's going on. At first, I thought it might be the dwarven liaison leaving the map, but after several tries I've noticed that he sometimes makes it off the map before the game crashes. It's nothing to do with dwarven labors, as far as I can tell. I enabled fastdwarf in DFhack to be sure, and it all went smoothly - until the crash.

As far as I can tell, it always happens at about the same time - 7th of Malachite, Mid-Summer of year 151.

Could it have something to do with inaccessible pets, or animal training status? One of my dwarves recently adopted the cockatiel I "bought" from the elves - in memory of a bird I used to have around the house - and I keep getting "Urist McIDaft cancels recover pet: Animal inaccessible". And I have giant gray langurs on chains for taming and eventual breeding. Might those have something to do with it?

Using any mods?

Does the error log contain anything useful?

You could always post the save, and people might take a look at it.

I had a similar problem crop up when grass eating of herbivores first was introduced.  I disliked that some ate at all, so I altered the raws to remove eating, and didn't regenerate the world. When the dwarven caravan would show up, pulled by animals I had poked, the game would explode.

To me, this sounds like the human caravan (mid summer) is bugged in some fashion.

Completely vanilla - didn't even bother adding missing [CHILD] tags. Only thing I've done with DFhack was build me a few obsidian walls to stop a flood - wasn't feeling like dealing with it the old fashioned way, had defenses to build - and an occasional cursecheck of suspicious migrants.

Didn't even think to check the error log, as I've never had need of it before. Investigating now.

This is the result. What the living carp.

And I always get caravans in the late season - practically at the end of the last month of the season, at that. And this happens in basically every world I run. Ever. No idea why.

I'll go and upload the save. Knowing my internet, that'll be done sometime in late August.

I get errors like that frequently in the error log. Basically means that the dwarf couldn't find a way to either pick up or drop off an item in a stockpile, if I remember right.

Perhaps you have a bugged ambush?

August has arrived on the calendar.

I don't understand how a pathing bug could cause a crash - much less a crash that always happens at the same time of the year.

I've sent the military out to patrol the woods outside the fortress, and found no ambushes. Did find a kobold thief, though.

I hope this isn't a lost cause. I really wanted to test my minecart cannon with a full payload of 500 serrated green glass discs.

The crash would happen when the invaders appear on the map, not when they are revealed.

Try disabling invaders, and see if the problem goes away...

Tried that now. No sell. I must confess, I am terribly confused about all of this.

Might embarking in an ocean biome have anything to do with it?

Several crashes, no success in stopping them.

Retry. I locked the outpost liaison in the room that he is standing in, having a meeting. Crash.

Retry. Locked the liaison in the room. Waited until he finished his speech. Saved game. Loaded game. No crash so far.
On 2 Galena the liason goes melancholy. I let the mayor out to get a drink (he was dehydrated). No crash, I get bored and just save/quit.

...So it was the liaison all along? That wretched scoundrel! I shall have him fed to the hounds!

Interestingly, I once ordered my military to kill him. The ensuing loyalty cascade was amusing, but didn't stop the crash.

Intriguing question: did the mayor die on the way to get his booze? He's been crippled since, I do believe, the second year of this embark. I've seen a miner bring him water while he was crawling on his way to the booze stocks.

Thank you for your time. I did as Urist Da Vinci said, except I let the diplomat out. Haven't crashed yet. This just makes the whole thing even more mysterious to me. I now find myself intrigued, from a programmer's standpoint, in exactly what the hell just happened.

Death by "unfortunate accident" doesn't cause a loyalty cascade that I know of.

Atom smash him. :D

Did you know there's a starving cavy sow atop the wall near depot? Probably one of geese put her up there.
Also, your controls suck. I've tried to show liaison your nice glass canon but it turned out the main bridge is controlled only by that pressure plate with goose. So, I've locked him in that maze and still got a crash.
