The Champion of Nothing
« on: June 18, 2013, 01:01:26 pm »

So, I have two squads of military dwarves. One is above average to godlike in skills. The other was a bunch of migrants with sicknasty names. 'Sazir Granitetool', 'Dodok Bronzeoaks', 'Goden Deadgirder'... things like that. Anyways, my Commander is my highest skilled dwarf, migrated as a Great Axedwarf, Great Shield User, Great Dodger, Great Armor User, and Skilled Teacher. Plus she has a pretty decent name herself, Ilral Crystalhail. After I became a Barony, I decided that [after reading about it on the wiki], Ilral would become my champion! She will lead my forces into combat, mutilate everything with an angry vengeance [her husband was assassinated by a goblin master theif. Popped up outta nowhere and stabbed him in the brain before the game even paused.] and train my legions into an unstoppable steamroller of goblin crunching destruction!

Thus my problem. She's my Champion, she's got her own little personal color [which apparently stops her from being listed as an 'Axe Lord'. Pfft.] but that's about it. She continues training with HER squad, whom are all between talented and expert, but my little second-line migrant army are all barely past dabbling. Should I... should I remove her from her squad? Does being Champion AND Commander conflict with one another?

I'm prety sure squads only train with other members of their own squad.  since your champion is still in your eliet squad thats the only one she trains.  your best bet would be to rotate half the members of the eliet squad with half the members of the newbies, preferably send your second best teacher over to the newbie squad to speed things up.   well techinicly seting up several smaller squads with 1 well trained soldier training a couple of recruits is better but that takes a bit more setup than just swaping a few members around.

Well according to the wiki, the Champion noble trains your entire military, not just one squad. Atleast thats what I gathered from it.

Champion isn't suppsed to be in a squad, I think. It's noble after all.

You can always set him to the squad what you want to be trained.

Well, I would totally pull him out, bu I can't. He's my champion AND commander, so he's the leader of my ntire military. Pretty sure I'd have to completely disband them all. =[

You should be able to just go to the noble screen and hit 'replace' for the Commander slot.

At first, I thought this worked. She dropped her military status and equipement, then went about picking up civilian gear. I waited with anticipation for ''pickup equipment'' to go away and see what happened next...

Then, she gained the 'Noble' job and proceeded to stand aroun, no where near my military. Making her non-military has made my Champion -far- less useful than she was before. =[

The wording on the wiki really needs to be changed if it says that.  The champion currently does nothing special aside from generating thoughts related to talking to nobility.  And whatever requirements they make for living spaces.  They don't do anything for your military at all right now.

Having said that, there shouldn't be any reason being a champion would interfere with military service.  I had a baron in the military several times without ill effect.

Quote from: Dwarf Fortress Wiki
Assigning a dwarf proficient in teaching and skilled in combat the role of Champion will allow him to quickly train up your entire army, as opposed to just his squadmates. A good champion can turn a wave of hapless migrants into a lean and lethal siege-breaker in a lot less time than what they could manage on their own.

Is what it says. I was reall hoping my commander would train my military into a facestomping squad of awesomeness. Oh well. :/

It's possible that I'm mistaken, but all of the evidence I've seen points toward them doing nothing.  Did they perhaps do the training thing in old versions of the game?

as a note you do not have to have your militia commanders in a squad at all.
