embark location with natural waterfall
« on: June 17, 2013, 10:56:14 am »

Hi,
I wasn't looking for that so I'm unprepared and not sure if I really want to play that. I got a new map with a natural waterfall... that picture is actually 1 z-level below the surface.

Goes 19 z-level deep, and crashes there into another river. I really don't know much about bridges and constructions.

1. I'm starting at the southeast corner and am isolated because of the canyon. Is it possible somehow to build on this z-level a bridge through the canyon or is it only possible at ground level?

2. Is it technically possible to build a tower from one level above the river at -20 to the surface in the open space? there is enough space for a standard-11x11...

3.  How to profit from the waterfall? Having a main corridor there and digging the wall off from what I have read?

1) You could dig a hole leading into the canyon and then build a bridge, using floors, to the other side, then dig into the wall on the other side.

2) Yeah you could totally build a tower, it just needs to be attached to the sides of the canyon by at least one wall or floor, or else it will trigger a cave in.

3) You can build grates across the water fall, which will let the water fall through but catch any fish that falls down, allowing you to butcher the fish. Note: I believe this only works for actual creature fish, like carp, which appear at the map edge and are then tracked, and not vermin fish, like lung fish or something, which teleport around and are not tracked as thoroughly.

I love natural waterfalls, but I'm scared of the potential FPS hit.

Build an Ice tower suspended between all three walls. Extended it down until you hit the world's core.

You could always dam it. That's be quite interesting actually, dividing the map into three sections through the river. On winter, the goblins attack and they can attack from all sides. But once it's thawed, things get more Fun for them.
