Many of my dwarfs are bothered by flies. What does this mean?

Your dwarves don't like flies?

In my experience, raw meat left out in the open will incur the wraith of flies and other vermin.

No they don't the fussy little bastards. Not like they smell all that good themselves.

flies appear near any food that is outside containers, not specially rotting meat. So they tend to fly around the food stockpiles. If they are well travelled flies tend to stay away though

I realized this the hard way, I set up a minecart quantum dump to avoid food rotting in the kitchen for lack of space in the stockpiles for my mass-production of roast, I placed a pastured cat over my quantum prepared food stockpiles and I thought great everything is covered, then I start seeing unhappy dwarves on therapist, I check and they have bad thoughts about flies, I check my quantum food stockpile and indeed there are flies, and no, cats can't kill those, so every time a dwarf goes to eat a masterwork roast they also get a bad thought from the flies...  :-[

What now? trying to set up a quantum dump using barrels? I haven't tried but I've read that using containers for quantum minecart dumping is bugged... maybe setting up a trapper dwarf around the food stockpile? or stop cheating and make an actual stockpile and produce barrels  :P

Please do share if you find any solution to that, especially the barrel dumping. I'm planning an automated minecart food distribution system and that is a showstopper. :(

After one of my fortresses died because of a lack of water in the middle of winter I have started two tactics. One, I make wells.  Which sometimes results in flooding.  *sigh* And second - I prefer to embark only in warm regions.  I noticed there are a LOT of flies - not just in the upper levels, near the kitchen and fields, but pretty much a lot of fly active outside.  Not clouds of them - but they are always present. I tried using doors to cut them down but the Dwarfs still complain about them.  If you explore the sky, go up a layer or two from the top layer, you can find a few fly symbols just zooming about.  Some regions just have flies.  Better then killer elephants.

I think you can still dump barrles out of a minecart fine, the issue is if the barrle isnt full (or bin) the dwarves may end up pulling it out of the resulting quantum stick one item in and dump it back at the startpoint of the dump leading to alot of pointless cyceling.  if your just delivering to a fully isolated burrow it might still work as long as you have haulers on the far side spread stuff back out after.

I wonder if the quantum stockpile is compounding the issue. I don't know how far away dwarves will see flies and be agitated by them, but if every single food item that "hosts" flies is in one single square, then you're guaranteed that every single dwarf that goes to your stockpile will be bothered by flies every time. Or it might not make much difference, dunno.
