How do I do this? I want to stop my reliance on cats.

If you look back in the thread, some people did try, and they got 8008135, which is significant only in that the digits resemble the letter in "BOOBIES".
And so dwarf fortress solves yet another of lifes great mysteries.

The elves sometimes bring tamed ones for trading.  Otherwise, you can try a cage trap and hope you get lucky.

if you build a wall and put cage traps on top they will path over it and get caught. they also run from war animals if that helps

Add the tag [USE_ANY_PET_RACE] and you can embark with falcons for 13 points.  If your civ has them.

And you can embark with giant desert scorpions for 1251 points.
