Cages you can open.
« on: June 14, 2013, 11:25:06 pm »

I have a Dwarf trapped by a cage-trap (I think it passed on in a fight and fell in) and find it impossible to get it out.  Levelers don't seem to work on a wooden cage, I can't seem to remove it, and can't assign the Dwarf to a cage I can open because it does not show up on the list of creatures who can be assigned to the cage.   I assume it is going to die.

Would it be easier to be able to lock or unlock cages so Dwarfs, and tame animals, can just be released without a slow death?  Just something in the menu that says 'Open' or 'Unlock'?    I don't see why levelers would be needed with harmless animals or fellow Dwarfs.

Where's the fun in dwarfs and fortress animals getting beneficial special treatment?  If anything, dwarfs should have a chance to set off their own fortress' traps even without being stunned, if they have a low Memory (forgot where it was) or Agility (clumsily stepped in the wrong place).

It's useful to keep a ‼torch‼ handy.

What? Levers don't work?

Are you sure you have actually build the cage somewhere instead of just putting it to your animal stockpile. If it is built, you should be able to link a lever to it, if you have enough mechanisms and haven't already linked it.

Also, I agree with this - it just makes so much sense. Cages should be able to be opened and closed manually, because why not. Those cages aren't super-complex steel vaults, they're simple cubes (which can hold anything inside them and protect it from drowning and everything)
