Well... there's Door Kickers, but I wouldn't really call it 'war based', more like 'Planning Mode of Rainbow Six: The Game'

it's actually pretty good. The store isn't pay to win, since everything can be ground out the hard way, but just offers a speedier path. It has a good bit of politics as well between the different factions. Will be interesting as this game unfolds.

Turn based squad tactics a-la X-com based in WW2, there were several games like that I think but  I can't recall the names.

Rising Storm was a mod/standalone thing for Red Orchestra 2.

Nope, but feel free to create one. I don't want to call for the entire forum to join yet until I can honestly say it's worth it. Going to play more tonight to be sure, and hopefully a couple of you will to so we can get a consensus.

Been playing some of March of War this evening (thanks for the link!) - seems fairly fun, but very rough around the edges still.  The worst of it is probably the constant 5-10 second freezes, and I mean constant.  It's sort of putting me in mind of a turn based version of the stalled/dead End of Nations, except with PvE and it looks like matches other than 1v1 require you to join a guild.

I went Shogun Empire, because flame tanks, ninjas, and hot air balloons (though I was tempted by the African Warlords with their war elephants).

I am not experiencing any of these freezes. I wonder if it's hardware related?

Dunno - game runs fine in terms of fps etc, it's just that every 10-20 seconds it freezes for 5-10 seconds (only during a match though, it's fine on the world map).  Seems to be a fairly common complaint - there's a few threads about it in the Steam forums.  Someone there reckoned there's a fix for it in the next update though, so fingers crossed.
