Dual Purpose Military

Can you have a squad with dwarves with both a crossbow and a melee weapon?  Would the dwarf know when to use which effectively?

AFAIK the simplest way to do it is to train them up as hammerdwarfs first, and then give them crossbows of the heaviest material you have available. That way they make the crossbow butt strike count.

Thanks guys, I'l try this out.  The thread seemed to say that order matters, maybe I'l do both (train up to hammerdwarf and give them a second weapon)
