Inaccessible Webs?
« on: May 18, 2013, 12:43:30 am »

So this isn't really an urgent question anymore because the fey-mood-bone carver who was demanding silk went insane and died, but I am curious.

I had breached the cavern, it was accessible, and my woodcutting dwarves were happily harvesting fungiwood around the cave spider webs. There were occasional cave spiders leaving webs around the fort that various dwarves were making off with (cleaning??). Plenty of idle dwarves had the spinning and weaving labours enabled. Orders were on "auto collect webs". In the stock window, it showed that I had hundreds of inaccessible webs, some of which were -dwarf adjacent-. If I go to the loom and manually add "Collect webs" labour, it generates "needs 10 undisturbed threads" cancellations.

How come the webs are inaccessible? Am I missing something?

Relatedly, do giant cave spiders leave corpses? The engagement got a little hairy, and I lost track of it. All that I can find are spider feet. Is it dead, or waiting?

If you're having trouble with web connectivity, i'd suggest starting with rebooting your modem. :P

In seriousness, i haven't a clue. Tried maybe suspending the job for a few moments then unsuspending it? Maybe suspend it, close the game, reload and then unsuspend, see if that forces it in gear?

Can the dwarves down there path back to your Loom? They're not walled-in or anything are they?

Centration. Similar to Spacestation 13, but in 3D and first-person. Sounds damn awesome.

I was waiting for someone else to chime in, since I don't have a definitive answer.  But I would forbid all the webs but some near the entrance to the caverns.  It might be trying to path to a web deeper in that is blocked by a tower cap or something.

GCS leave corpses.  I'd check the stocks screen to try and find it.

You have unexplored sections of the caverns with webs in it. Your dwarves are trying to task one of those, but can't find a path. I usually solve this by forbiding all webs in my stocks menu then going back and unforbiding a couple near the caverns entrance. Also the webs that appeared in your fort proper, will disapear if a dwarf/pet walks over them.

I usually just suspend the collecting web job on the loom and send everyone who whines about pathing to the retracting drawbridge about 50 z-levels above my fortress.

Hilarity ensues.

Also, IIRC webs will be trampled if a non-web gatherer passes over them.

Thanks! It does seem to have been a pathing thing that has gradually resolved itself.

This right here. My general solution for it is to just turn off auto-spinning of webs in the workshop menu, and then just manually ordering web collection if I need some thread made.

It would be brutally difficult and probably won't work. In other words, it's absolutely dwarven!

You know, it would be nice if there's a way to treat web-gathering like sand-gathering. Let us define a web gathering zone.
If there's a worry that the Zone interface is getting cluttered, the Resource Collection activities (sand, clay, web, wood, etc) can be nested under, say, "Collection Zone".

One of the toads decided to go for a swim in the moat - presumably because he could path through the moat to my dwarves. He is not charging in, just loitering in the moat.

The toad is having a nice relaxing swim.
The goblin mounted on his back, however, is drowning.
