hypothetical question about dragons and glaciers
« on: May 22, 2013, 12:19:33 am »

A dragons fire is said to be hotter than the sun.

Could a dragon then cause a fllash flood by visiting the northern glaciers and set fire to everything?

Fire doesn't really work that way in DF. Yeah dragonfire/normal fire is hot, but its temperature effects are pretty much confined to whatever tile it's occupying, meaning it can't melt ice in an adjacent tile, and since it can't occupy the same tile as ice that means no melting.

It would be brutally difficult and probably won't work. In other words, it's absolutely dwarven!

No, the ice would instantly turn into steam.

That dragon breath is hot.

I do believe there had been some !!SCIENCE!! (yes, that IS science on fire) with adventurers lighting a camp fire on a frozen ocean.  The result was the campfire object melting the ice tile it was on, then falling a Z level, then melting THAT tile, then falling a Z level, ad neaseum.  Also, since the weather was freezing, the tile that no longer contained the campfire would freeze again.

The effect was a couple of tiles of smoke left on the surface.  I don't recall if the flash melt/freeze tiles had a smoke contaminant.  And this is all frm memory, mind you.  I believe it was possible to encase yourself in ice if you did it right.  I don't think you could make it all the way down, however, since you can't occupy the same tile as a campfire.  As usual, YMMV.
