whats wrong with my Stone/Wood-Stockpile / my Haulers
« on: May 09, 2013, 10:35:51 am »

Hi there.

I have a problem with my stockpiles/haulers.
The first few seasons, everything works fine, but when im done with first defence and foodproduction, i start digging out a real fortress, the provisional stocks and room will be replaced by specialised rooms and stockpiles.
But when i have a level with 5 rooms of 20x20 tiles or more, my haulers just stop carrying stones. i have my first 20x20 room made into a huge stockpile for stone only and deleted the "Stone" category from all other stocks - now i have 20+ idlers, all with hauling enabled, lots of stones everywhere in the new claimed level, but nobody seems to be willing to fill the stockpile.

The same happens with wood when i close (delete) my outside-wood stockpile and build a new one underground - nobody takes the wood.

I tryed to make a dump-zone and set "dump" to most of the stones and wood, but this also doesnt work. nobody wants to carry stones or wood to my new stockpiles.
Carpenters/Masons take their needs just fine and hauling other goods also works.

does anyone know how to fix that?

(sry for my bad english :) i hope you can understand it :) )

Try using 'q' to raise the amount of max wheelbarrows your stone stockpile allows.  If there's only one wheelbarrow, then, despite the size of the stockpile, only one dwarf will be bringing stones there, one at a time.  So it could appear that the stones aren't moving at all.

Another problem may be that they are already claimed to be used in a construction.  The fact that carpenters are taking your wood to build things may be the reason why haulers are refusing to touch it.

Oh, i assigned no wheelbarrow at al, for my first stockpile they just carryed the stone/wood.
"already for construction" , well, thats possible for ~30 stones, but i have much more than 100 sprayed everywhere in my fortress (it always shows 99 stones when i cue up a new building)

I'll try it with the wheelbarrows, thanks for the fast reply :)

dwarves don't use wheelbarrows to haul wood, I'm pretty sure.

A stone stockpile, by default, is set to one wheelbarrow.  If you don't have enough wheelbarrows, I'm pretty sure your dwarves treat it like it's set to zero, anyway.  If you don't have wheelbarrows, hauling will actually go faster if you set your stockpiles to "0 wheelbarrows" since, now, more than one dwarf will haul stones to it at a time.

Another thing worth mentioning is that only one stone can fit in a tile.  So, if you have a 20 x 20 stockpile and 99 + stone, you're going to see stone lying around.

It is possible that you accidentally changed your standing orders to forbid hauling wood or stone.  Fairly common mistake.

20x20 = 400 ;)

and yes, problem is solved - thank you. I checked the stock and 1 Wheelbarrow was assigned to it - i didnt assign it. Now that i set it to 0, all my idlers have something to do and the stones are flying to my storageroom.
Assigning wheelbarrows restricts the number of haulers for this stockpile? well, then i dont think ill ever use them. Stones come in huge numbers and 3 is defenitely not enough - 3-5 miners just produce to many stones - and all other items ive seen are not that slow to carry without wheelbarrows, so theres no reason to restrict the workernumber.

"Stones come in huge numbers and 3 is defenitely not enough"

The answer to that problem is: multiple stockpiles with 3 wheelbarrows each!  I usually have a separate stockpile for each color of stone, one for magma-safe, and maybe one or two special ones I want to use in construction (e.g. marble or obsidian).

Hahahaha, everyone here is so efficient.  I just have boulders lying around all over my fortress.  Have my dwarves share a bed with a chunk of marble.

Unless you're in a hurry to get the stones moved or if you don't want all your idlers hauling them instead of something important that came up I'm finding the wheelbarrows kind of useful. Although there's other ways around that as well I guess.

A dwarf moving a stone without a wheelbarrow will do so very slowly -- something like 1/20 or 1/10 normal walking speed.  So you really do want to assign wheelbarrows to your stone stockpiles.  The same goes for any other stockpiles in which you're storing heavy items (like gold statues).

Stone stockpiles automatically assign 1 wheelbarrow to themselves when created.  Other stockpiles don't, but you can assign the wheelbarrows yourself.

Don't forget to actually create some wheelbarrows (I prefer wooden ones because they're quick & easy).

Stone stockpiles don't make a lot of sense. It's good to make one near a mason shop or crafter that keeps half a dozen stone or something on it to keep them supplied, but huge stone stockiples aren't good when you have high level miners. They generate stone almost every square anyway, unless you're clearing out sand levels. Making a dump zone for stone is much better, and pretty much been the traditional way of clearing places out.

well, for many purposes stone stockpiles are useless, aside from cleaning up corridors, which i hate watching personally, but it's not really "useful"

however, i do use stockpiles linked to workshops to manage what materials are used, mostly one stockpile with regular stone types assigned to a set of workshops for regular crafting, doors, tables, general trade good production
and another stockpile with magma safe stone for those special projects, and maybe for some pretty color matching constructions

I've just had this happen with a new game of mine. I hadn't played the absolute latest version yet, so I just installed the package with the phoebus set, and after a year or two, I've got a stone stockpile next to my mason workship with 3 wheelbarrows, and it's empty. Yet there is plenty of chalk laying around, which it had no problem being filled with before. I tried editing the pile, removing wheelbarrows, etc.  (its just a 1x3 stockpile for quick access) now my mason and craftsdwarf are walking all over the place getting stone.

even after deleting the stockpile and making new ones (a 2x1 and a 1x1) they're not being filled promptly even with wheelbarrows and tons of idlers.
The 2x1 was eventually filled, but the 1x1 with or without a wheelbarrow is sitting there empty.
