About bins and barrels
« on: May 07, 2013, 07:45:21 pm »

I don't understand. I didnt play DF for a while, but I remember I could store stuff in barrels and bins without doing anything special.
But on the new game I started today, I can't get my dwarves to store anything in them. I tried to change stockpiles, min/maxing the numbers of barrels/bins... But nope, they just let those containers in a stockpile's corner. Any help plz ?

What are you trying to store in them?  Only certain things can go in barrels and bins.  Don't know if it was always like this, but only food can be stored in barrels.

Yeah I double checked the wiki. Food and booze in barrels, and gems and other crafted products in bins.
I did different stockpiles. One for the finished goods, one for rough gems, one for cut gems, one for food/booze. But ALL the barrels/bins are staying empty in the finished goods stockpile.

You probably just don't have enough stuff yet.  They go get them as needed.

Do you mean they need a full stockpile to begin to store stuff in bins and barrels ? Last time I played I think they just put everything in it ASAP.

If the stockpile has no goods in it it will have just the 1 barrel.  Once the barrel has any item in it they will go get a 2nd barrel.  And so on.

Well I did 2 screenshot to show you.
1)  http://hpics.li/c2604ef
2)  http://hpics.li/542de57
First one, the stockpile with barrels and bins. And you can see the one with rough gems and cut gems.
Second one, my food/alcohol stockpile.

I played several hours, and they never moved the container nor put anything in them :(

The only thing I can think of;

Did you press "p" and then "*" and "+"  a bunch of times to set aside "reserved" barrels and bins ?

Oh, well, my point was *don't* reserve them.  It has exactly the effect that you don't want, leaving aside a bunch of empty containers.

If you upload your save someone will look at it, otherwise we're playing guessing game.  This is definitely not a normal situation.

Alright, got it, having a look around :)

..
I'm afraid the solution was pretty mundane -- the two gem piles and the food pile were all set to accept 0 containers.  I (q)uery them, press (r) or (v) as appropriate a few times and it works perfectly.

If you construct a stockpile as a gem stockpile, it will automatically get its "max bins" set to the maximum value when greated.

If you construct a stockpile as an animal stockpile, then edit the settings to make it a gem stockpile because that's what you really meant but you forgot to select it, it automatically got its "max bins" set to 0 (because animal stockpiles can't use bins), and so you have to adjust that setting too.

This happens to me all the time because I use stockpiles with multiple categories a lot of the time. Shift-R will set the pile to max straight away.

Haha that's weird because I played a bit with the max bins/barrels, but I guess I didnt wait long enough to see it working.

I'll remember about animal stockpiles :]

Thanks to all of you for your help, much appreciated !
