Controlling flow of Magma\Water
« on: May 05, 2013, 06:20:43 pm »

I'm trying to find a building which allows fluids to flow through it, but prevents the anything else (Goblins\Dwarves) from passing through. Would the wall grate do this?

grates, bars, or fortifications will do this

the first two are vulnerable to building destroyers, also there is a bug where a flowing liquid can magically 'push' creatures through these obstructions

*and apparently there's another bug that causes fully submerged fortifications to be passable, i didn't know this  :-\

So basically, you want to use one of the various schemes to induce a moody dwarf to create an artifact wall/floor grate. Artifact furniture is not only indestructible (and fireproof, for that matter), but building destroyers will path to them and spend all of their efforts trying to destroy it with no success. (This is the basis of one of many traps that systematically eliminates such creatures, among them the Uninvited Guests you may encounter from time to time.)

Other than that, several layers of bars, fortifications, and the occasional drawbridge (which is completely indestructible, unless someone too big gets in the way, but does not allow the passage of liquids at all unless it is lowered remotely) will reduce the chances of an unwanted creature getting in to numbers too small to be realistic.

floor grate and a pump.

the floor grate should be on the one tile that is flooded and has access to the exterior, the pump draws water through the grate and you can do whatever you need with it, and even building destroyer enemies that are able to path underwater won't be able to destroy the floor grate from bellow.

Kaos has it right. Building destroyers can't destroy things above them in most circumstances (the wiki has more info on how it works). They can destroy anything on the same z-level and can pass through fortifications or be pushed through by flows sometimes. Floor grates are your best option. They stop pathing and building destroyers, allow liquids through, and can be constructed out of many magma-safe materials. Pumps can pump through grates as well.

if the above isn't clear, the idea is to cover the tile the pump draws water from with a grate.  Water is teleported away from the tile without any flow, so its safe.

While adding magma to anything will make it dwarfy, adding the word "magma" to your post does not necessarily make it funny.
