Some questions (snatchers, cave dragons and so on)
« on: May 03, 2013, 12:28:07 pm »

Hi again and thanks for the helpfull answers. A really friendly community this (as long you're not a elf of course) :)

1. Baby snatchers snatches dwarf kids. What happens with them? Read somewhere that they can later come back as part of goblin sieges? Seen some dwarfs alongside the goblins but never one of my fortress...

2. Under a siege I managed to capture 9 cave dragons (some in wooden cages...).
Can My dwarfs handle these beasts without getting killed? Was thinking of a cave dragon zoo...

3. My fort is walled off completely and I have 2 drawbridges and something like 60 cage-traps... before I was affraid of everything but now after 2 sieges that has been won by me without Any help from my military I'm starting to think "is this all...have I already managed to be a successfull DF player?"
So, tell me I'm wrong! Soon my defensive-fortress will get some serious challanges!?

1. No idea if the game actually keeps track of the kids. Honestly, the goblins are doing them a favor considering the way most forts go.
2. You can build the cages safely. Don't try taming them and letting them out (pasture or pet).
3. Goblins \ land megabeasts are rarely a major problem in dwarf fortress (cage traps are a bit too powerful) - It's when you start digging too greedily and too deep that it gets fun....

1. I have not ever seen a dwarf come with the goblins in a siege or ambush. But I know that you can see them being part of that civilization in legends mode. Maybe if we set the child limit to some absurd number then left them all outside and waited a few years. Maybe made another fort they would come.

2. I wouldn't open the cage. But isn't there a way that you can tame them safely?

3. There are several options. You could try mods. Masterwork has the fortress defence mod in it. That can add some very powerful siegers. There are also many other mods that can do this. You could also come up with rules for yourself saying that you won't use doors or bridges or walls. You could make some kind of absurd and maybe pointless mega project. You could build an above ground fort.

animals caught as part of a siege will always be somewhat hostile, not a good idea to try to tame them

Jam a door with its corpse and let all the goblins in. Hey, nobody said it had to be a weapon against your enemies.

Snatched children become members of the goblin civ.  You can imagine them being eaten, being used for forced labor, put into sexual slavery, or whatever other dark evil things goblins do.  I'm pretty sure that as far back as 40d (but maybe before) snatched dwarves can become members of attacking sieges once they come of age.  I've never seen it personally, and it does take a few years for the kids to grow up, but I have heard of it.  Also, goblins snatch during worldgen, so seeing non-goblins among an ambush party is actually pretty normal.

You can have fun with the cave dragons, but you cannot breed or tame them.  The best you can do is capture a wild female one, tame it, and its possible that invader males will fertilize the eggs (prob need to give cave dragons the child token if they don't already have it).  Easier is to just use invader dragons to fight other things or dwarfs.

While adding magma to anything will make it dwarfy, adding the word "magma" to your post does not necessarily make it funny.

Yeah, cage traps and weapon traps are fairly overpowered; in your first couple of seasons you can build enough cage/weapon traps to defeat any goblin siege that your fort will ever face.

Many players tend to limit their use of cage/weapon traps once they get more experienced with the game, and rely on more hazardous or elaborate means of defense.

I'll sometimes setup a bank of cage traps to provide secure transport for fresh conscripts to the "Sparing" arena's.  Usualy this also serves as the primary defence for the first siege while I'm still laying the ground work for the more hazordous defences.  Afterall it takes a while to build a pumpstack to the magma sea, cant do it before the first siege normaly.  Still once the visitor decontamination shower is ready the trap corridor is normally retired.
