The My project is killing my fort (FPS) Advice needed.
« on: April 30, 2013, 01:14:27 pm »

Well, Decided to do a dig it out kind of project whit whole fort going from one pillar from bottom of map and up. (after ditching some other projects) So I began the mining and digging, lets just say 100,000+ stones do not really make the CPU happy. ;) I seem to have a a delusion of using 4 Jewler workshops on cut stone, and 4 more to encrust Finished goods (That include Troll Fur Thongs). Am I deluding myself, or will this work, Specially whit hurling it at the merchants for giving them 10 times the value of what I buy Controlled and decent trade taking the encrusted clothes of the map.
Added a Link to the map, so you can get a look at current fort, to maybe give other advice to increase FPS from 7-9 FPS up a bit..

Note, the drop have splattered a goblin into parts when dodging off the cliff.

Oh, and If I manage to keep digging out stones, think I should use the cavern water to obsidianize the lava/magma lakes and dig that out down to that undiggable melted rock (ofcourse leaving obsidian round the stream that will not obsidianise)

I don't think you can encrust clothes with gems.

Clothes seem to get encrusted as Finished goods. Pretty usefull for me to get "ridd" of rocks.

With a quantum stone stockpile, the mined stones shouldn't be too bad for your FPS.

Thanks, Going to keep the second floor minecart stonedump running.. Just wish I could get gem-cutters to wear helmets.. (loosing a few who gets rocks while minecart dumps).

Draft Jewelers to their own squad
Provide and designate armored uniform for J-Squad
Make sure Inactive=Uniformed

Or there is a safer method that requires a bit of intervention on your part.
Have the minecart dumping onto a lever linked hatch above the "Stone Closet"
Lock the door to the stone closet
Pull the lever twice
Unlock door
Repeat as needed.

You could do something with pressure plates and logic to replace the lever but your fps is low enough as-is.

Did you know that there's a dwarf trapped on level 52?

Half my Gemcutters/Jewelers are in a squad, a backup crossbow squad for when I need more bolts flying. ;) Should get more inn squads soon..

Should probably sett up something for the stone drop, that hatch, hm, then to rebuild track whit a up ramp.. (Put the drop spot as restricted to prevent dead travelers)

For trapped dwarf, is it the one in the area whit fortifications? if so, there are stairs down under the bolt stockpile. ;)

You don't need to dump things down a hole out of a minecart, you can dump to the same level.  No falling rocks, no dead jewelers.

I will run the experiment to completion anyway, however. Even if the only reason why there is a punctured equilibrium in the fortress is because I have been brutally butchering babies
EDIT: I just remembered that dwarves can't equip halberds. That might explain why the squads that use them always die.

For some reason, I just tought it would not empty into a tile that already had items in it.. Posting here learns you something new all the time.. ;)

I suspect path-finding and excessive use of stockpiles are more to blame for FPS problems than the stones.

Congrats, Psieye. This is the first time I've seen a derailed thread get put back on the rails.

I might be able to reduse stockpiles some.
But are there somthing I can do on pathfinding?

Thanks all for advice.
