Slabs not being engraved
« on: May 02, 2013, 11:34:14 pm »

I had a problem with dwarves dying from falling down a waterfall. Now some of them have come back as ghosts. I created slabs to memorialize them, but the job keeps being cancelled because of "no unengraved slabs," which is completely false. I did not see any bug reports related to this.

The slabs are potentially being carted off to a stockpile, which removes them from being useable until they are put back down by a dwarf, or for some reason they have been made forbidden. Check the mason with 'T' to see if they are there, and if forbidden, unforbid them, else, hunt in your finished goods stock pile, or furniture stockpiles.

About the only other thing I can think of is that the slabs have been put, or built somewhere that the stone-crafter cannot reach. Are they behind locked doors?

I had a problem with slabs in my lost fort when I had set the stone stockpile to 'give' to the craft workshop, this prevented the workshop from engraving the slab, which was in the furniture stockpile. If you use stockpile linking you might have to give from the furniture pile that has the slabs as well.

my thoughts would be either you built them and are trying to engrave, in that case deconstruct them first

it could also be a problem with burrows or give/take stockpile orders

I know both have been mentioned by others, just thought I'd repeat it. Those would seem the most likely problems

Only because it wasn't maybe clear from your initial post:
You did have a stonecrafter engrave them by name after the mason made the slabs, right?  Make as many slabs as you like, whenever it's convenient, then when you have a ghost, task the stonecrafter with engraving it from the list of possible names.  Then place that chosen one using the "x" function to make sure he's put to rest.  Shouldn't be a problem.  As mentioned in the Wiki -- as peculiar as this sounds -- dwarves get a good thought from passing by memorials (not tombs or burials).  So, a well-positioned memorial room isn't a bad waste of space.
