Mebil's logbook: 73:

water covering

SPRING

I stayed outside even while I was on break until some spearmaster named Tobul was chained down over those elvish puzzleboxes. He won't be lonely at least, as the prisons are so nice that many dwarves go there to eat anyways.
Elf merchants came, they were directed away from the magma hammer but persisted in getting their pointy noses in it.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

So I ordered that they be given a demonstration.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

I imagine their curiosity is satisfied.

SUMMER

Work opening up the passages in the caverns keeps turning up more areas contaminated with cave blob fluid. Those blister sure look nasty.
A great skinless fire-breathing chameleon with a trunk on it's bloated body caused quite an alarm in the caverns. Kubuk the gemcutter was crushed in the workings of the bunker's west drawbridge while fleeing to safety, pointlessly too as the beast was shot dead from the second floor fortifications by the marksdwarf Ducim Kacothosian. He named his copper crossbow Cleanedurges the Blameless Conqueror after the feat.
Dodok, another unemployed gem cutter, is sent to the caverns to lure a giant salamander, trapped by cavern growth, into a room under a section of ceiling hanging from a support. He fails, dieing one step back from the opened door where the salamander safely sat until it lunged at a dwarf coming for Dodok's remains and was crushed by the trap.
The magma hammer sends both war elephant and goblin siege forces to the bottom of the old volcano.

AUTUMN

The cavern wash system is used to try and move some of the worst of the cave blob fluid contamination before clean-up of the area.
Bugbats and plump helmet men led the caverns militia squads on a few lengthy chases.
New marble sources are dug out deep down by the magma sea.
A bridge is built in the caverns across a deepening temporary river.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Some of the grizzly bears are starting to have cubs, the small and weak are butchered, they've been pretty tender.
The end of autumn brings rain and war elephants, neither get inside.

WINTER

Some creeping eyes interrupt the flow of obsidian from the caverns
Scaffolding completed to level 22, reaches higher.
An enormous hairy flea caused panic in the caverns but couldn't stay focused on just one dwarf and caught none.
White tigermen siege again, some try to run back out the magma hammer so the outer main gate is closed and they get the magma.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

The goblins that arrived after will have to wait until the magma dries up before they will get their chance.

Mebil's logbook: 74:

water covering

SPRING

Fire imps joined the goblins' advance. The bulk of both forces, crippled by their fall into the pit, are dispatched by axe.
A gigantic scaly bristle worm with a shell made a run at the dwarves in the caverns bunker but was shot to death from the second floor fortifications. Now Nil Ginonrovod has named his crossbow as well; Othil Agesh.
Northern incinerator cycled.
A miner died in the caverns, no-one is sure why, fewer care.
Project stockpiles are expanded again.
Some of the hydro power plants are making reduced power due to low water levels but it's not a real problem yet.
I'm a pro at felling trees now but just had to evacuate the surface ahead of arriving frogmen, tigermen, goblins and furies! All but one squad of bowgoblins died to the magma hammer until the powerplant stalled upon activation of the caldera re-fill. The last died in the pit.

SUMMER

We're working on re-filling and re-starting the powerplant.
I found the ghost of Kubuk Uzolgeshud haunting my tomb. He was crushed in last summer's bunker gate accident. Not my fault. Uzolgeshud = Oilyfortress, I hope they're not related.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

The militia was sent out to wipe out the frogmen and furies on the surface. There was still some standing timber that I had to clear-cut once they were gone.
A different Mistem, now Vaboknazush, has been elected our new mayor.
Power is restored.
A denning area is dug out in which to raise the grizzly bears.
Further formations of marble are located near the magma sea and designated for mining.
Kivish was wounded in the sortie. I gave him some water, I felt good.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

AUTUMN

Asob is turning yellow about this latest puzzlebox she wants. I don't think she's gonna give up on this one. The new mayor likes shields, we make 'em copper, and for silver stuff; warhammers.
Another small expansion to the power plant is started for insurance.
Pumpstacks to level 39, right near the top, scaffold to level 25, the project manages itself mostly now, my time is spent felling the remaining surface trees polluting our territory while at the same time avoiding Asob outside.
Kumil, a carpenter, is chained (finally), her children then surround and taunt her just out of reach. Breeding is a joke (unless it's war grizzly bears).
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Ilral the legendary crutch-walking planter uses his skills to successfully evade a Reacher in the few remaining tight passages of the caverns until the beast was wounded by bolts and quint-sected by Kogsak.
Trading with the mountain home went well.
Crundle infestation in the caverns. Clothier Iden Bomrekmomuz is caught off guard but wearing his civilian-issue steel. He proceeds to choke-out, joint-lock and bite-and-shake disable then beat to death three of the crundles before the caverns militia could arrive. A good dwarf that one.

WINTER

Expansion and clearing of the caverns continues as do crundle and bugbat interruptions.
The medical staff is finally seeing to Kivish.
Bear-breeding is picking up.
Some new trees have come up through the snow in the west. All of my hard work clear-cutting the surface wasted! I'll re-clear the surface of them and burn the lumber to ash

Synopsis: 75 - 115:

After Mebil Koddegel's death and replacement by Atir Rimscibes the history of Stormrack was no longer well recorded. Little was lost as construction and war both went forwards with little impedance.

The main driving force of the fortress was the heroic "Kogsak Lustrouscraft the Failed Purge". Well-liked as the leader of Stormrack's military she became god-like after claiming the legendary adamantine battle axe "Mortalfortune the Armory of Requiring" made by Kulet Asobisul. Her status was sealed in late autumn of 93 when she took to the surface single handed and struck down the giant Atup Specialclimax. An enemy of old of The Creation of Drinks, he had struck down Queen Iden Boltsquest's (also killed by a giant) successor King Kosoth Tombsshake, the second ruler of The Creation of Drinks and wounded General Mafol Ropeattacks, consort of it's third ruler, queen Kivish Entrancedsword.

The lengthy construction of "The Black Cauldron" was completed in the autumn of 109 and finished filling by the late spring of 112. After it's testing project H.A.L.O. was commissioned.

Without Mebil around anymore the surface trees befouled our territory once again despite frequent wildfires. The elves love the things and use them as cover to ambush our citizens so Kogsak ordered the surface sterilized permanently. After the surfaces' soil layer was channeled away and the dam-controlled river set loose to fill the depression (OOC; with some last-minute assistance from the fortress' reservoir) The Black Cauldron was fired a second time to pave our land a uniform sterile black. The stone engravers were tasked with smoothing the entire thing.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

The caverns were re-opened and the bunker re-stocked and re-dwarfed. The worst of the forgotten beasts were trapped in sealed cells, the weaker ones defeated, shot by marksdwarves from the bunker. The caverns' wood is harvested and stockpiled further up in the fortress from were it is used to start the H.A.L.O. system's scaffolding.

With several decades of unremarkable construction and war dominating the near future, Kogsak begins training and stockpiling the fortress' best gear in preparation for an Adventure. Her mission, should she choose to accept it, is to travel to the land's of our former sister civilization, "The Dreamy Ship," southeast of the mountains, track and hunt down the night man Momuz Tunneledfaint the Crypt of Skulls, the beast who  kidnapped the Queen of The Dreamy Ship, Nomal Whiplenses and end his life for the glory of Stormrack!

OOC: I one day hope to have a single dwarf that would be worthy enough to join the ranks of the Deep Palisades in the Dwarven Mountain Halls of Eternal Badassery.

Coldmonkey: "The idea that having flaming tools and introducing them to the intimate workings of someone you don't get along with is much too human for these forums. I mean, it's not really that hard, is it? Anyone can wield a torch, it doesn't prove anything. Wearing flaming clothes on the other hand, or better yet, wearing nothing at all and being on fire... that is the essence of dwarfish behavior."

116:

Kogsak returned from her adventure successful in it's stated goals but un-fulfilled. Fighting a demon-king from a dark fortress had seemed the only thing worthy of her and her axe's greatness.

Returning back from a trip all the way South to the edges of the Icelands after being so disappointed she quietly returned to her normal fortress life of eat, spar, sleep and slay. Posted to the upper 'A' barracks she resumed the duties of killing any invaders that slipped through the main defenses.

As the years had passed the fortress' workforce of fortress-raised peasants toiled endlessly on the carpentry of the H.A.L.O. system's construction scaffolding. The youngest peasants were repeatedly conscripted into wood-cutting squads to reap ever-needed materials from the dangers of the cavern. Watched as they were from the lower barracks in the cavers bunker, work interruptions, maimings and deaths were limited to acceptable occurrences.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

117:

The Eastern semi-circle of access catwalk and construction scaffold are nearing completion. Additional catwalks from the roof of the Black Cauldron going North, South and West to the scaffolding ring are added. Floodgates for the fill-bridge are already being installed and linked.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

118:

Work on the second level of the more-complete Eastern side is started.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

119:

The bottom scaffold level is 70% completed.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

At least 50% of the second, simpler level is completed as well.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

The top scaffold level is started on the East section. It's being made from Obsidian that will be recovered and re-used in the continuing production of floodgates and mechanisms. The fill-bridge is over half finished as well.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

120:

We are close to connecting the last gap in the lowest level ring. Peasant dwarves lost to the project sometimes come back to check on its progress.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

124:

With the entire scaffold completed and the fill-bridge finished work began installing and linking the floodgates on the top level. After the first blocks of floodgates were installed and test cycled much of the management could then reliably be relegated to Urist McMacro for the remainder of the project.
