Lancerlands: weak military on a volcano
« on: May 31, 2013, 03:31:52 pm »

Hello boys and girls,

I'm not good at writing up juicy stories, but I'm posting short summary videos of my sessions with this fortress on my youtube gaming channel. Here is what I have so far:

Session 1 summary (10:09):

We set up our basic sustenance. Having embarked on a volcano, we manage to get our magma smelter by the end of summer, but alas, we have no anvils to forge anything. Hopefully the caravan from our mountainhomes will bring us some.

Session 2 summary (6:37):

We started building walls, built a magma forge, and are looking for carverns. A huge migrant wave of 29 dwarves arrived in the Spring of 252. Many of them will be drafted into military.

Session 3 summary (11:23):

We were building beds, digging down, building traps, failed to kill a snatcher, failed to build a hospital in time and failed at trading with the Elves. Now we're planning a proper well and barracks.

Session 4 summary (12:15):

The housings are almost done, we have some weapons and armor, but are lacking the fighting skills. A Minotaur has come and we probably won't be able to seal our fortress off and catch it in a cage trap. We'll have to face it with all we have.

The full sessions are streamed on my twitch.tv channel, you're always welcome to join.

Session 5 summary (08:20)

The fight with the Minotaur went exceptionally well. We even managed to deal with two squads of Goblins afterwards. No casualties, only four average injuries. We were surprised when we realized that the channels to our water tank are accessible. Water buffaloes love them.

Session 6 summary (08:21)

We lost four dwarves to a squad of goblin crossbowmen. We have a mayor and a baron now and are making rooms for them. We desperately need to find the caverns. cattle is dying of hunger because they have nowhere to grass. Our best furnace operator has been found dean completely drained of blood. The vampire hunt begins.

Session 7 summary (10:40)

Our mayor is a vampire! He was sentenced to a beating for sucking out the blood from two of our dwarves. We will lock him up in his quarters as soon as he gets there. Platform for barracks is built, bridge the marksdwarves too. We are currently very low on booze. Emergency Plump helmet farmes have been set up. We have found caverns, but they only have mud. No moss, no fungi, no trees. We decided to slaughter all of our big grazers because there would not be enough of moss or grass for them to graze on. We also take a look at our artifacts. We have a nice recursive one.

Session 8 summary (05:07)

We were preparing for a siege. We drafted 30 more dwarves, now having 6 full squads. Unfortunately it's mostly recruits without any experience whatsoever. The human diplomat was a vampire and a lycanthrope. I dicovered his dead body on a stair. Probably my dwarves have killed him when he turned into a creature of the night. We'll try to investigate that. But now we have a siege in front of our doors. Help!

Session 9 summary (06:49)

We lost one dwarf to the Siege. It was only one big squad of human bowmen. We extended our bridge to be able to shoot down on them. Unfortunately, they moved towards our entrance and were shooting back. We got rid of the Goblins we captured in our cage traps by dumping them into the volcano. The caravan from our mountainhomes arrived. Let's hope we'll be able to buy some drinks and food for the winter.

Session 10 summary (04:30)

We survived a goblin siege and two or three ambushes. Our wounded dwarves are recovering in the hospitals and require gypsum plaster powder to have their broken limbs cast. We are building our elevated walkabouts further to better defend our growing fortress.

Session 11 summary (05:20)

Soon after we have traded with the elves and build a bit more of our elevated walkarounds, a massive human siege has come. it's 27 macemen and pikemen mounted on horses or camels. The worst thing about this is that they have caught us off-guard with lots of civilians outside and military dispersed all over the fortress. We may still win this siege, but it is likely to be a pyrrhic victory weakening us so much that we may succumb to the goblin siege or even ambushes in the winter.

Session 12 summary (04:18)

We have survived the human siege, but lost six soldiers and a civilian. Several others are wounded. A lot of dwarfblood has been shed for the glory of Armok, the blood god.

Session 13 summary (07:07)

Our dwarves are so careless! Two or three of our patients have died of thirst in the hospital because nobody cared about them. One healthy orphan baby also died of thirst. I told two dwarves to do nothing but taking care of the wounded but it did not really help much. Luckily 11 new dwarves arrived in autumn of 255 which helped those guys out. They are also helping us building the elevated defense bridges for our marksdwarves, so I'm sure they'll blend in nicely.

Session 14 summary (09:24)

Just as we started recovering from the human siege, an even stronger goblin siege came. We have lost quite a few skilled dwarves. This has set us back about a year of military practice. We have little hope that we can hold the fortress with only 60 military dwarves. We have allowed more immigrants in. They might help us building a defense moat around our fortress. Hopefully we'll make it before the human siege comes.

Session 15 summary (09:29)

Two more sieges have passed. Goblins, and goblins with trolls. We had fun fighting them. Only 7-8 Dwarves died and the injuries were mild. Our walkarounds are almost done. The moat turned out to be a lot more work than we expected. we'll make it our long term project. Two migrant waves brought over 20 dwarves to our fortress. Thanks to them we have now five highly skilled dwarves fully covering all the medical jobs. They are not doing any other type of work. It has helped the healthcare a lot. Dwarves are now actually getting healed rather than dying of thirst or hunger in the hospital.
