For me, FPS death (e.g. from map-wide fire, lol) is not especially fun in most cases. But I suppose it would depend on the status of the particular fortress in question (such as whether magma is available yet, etc).  :)
It seems like it mostly travels in a line, with a burned out area behind it, at least in my experience, although I have seen map-wide fires in some people's screen shots.  The only time I had near total FPS death (other than fire clowns from the circus) it was from a dragon getting into the entry of my fort.  I had had the "clever" idea of luring it in so I could attack it from multiple directions, thinking I could contain it.  Guess what all the workshops were made of since I started with no stone or metal?

Oops.  Definite facepalm moment.

It didn't help that there were also multiple artifacts just laying around that caught on fire (including a non-artifact book) and since they couldn't be destroyed by fire, they just incessantly generated smoke and melted anything on the same square that was meltable.  I finally figured out I could dig from above and use a bucket brigade to extinguish them.
