Is there a way to find magma before embark? Maybe even surface volcano? I recall some very old DF versions had this feat in search options.

You could search for magma pipes/pools in 40d, but since every map has magma now, it has been taken out. Of course you can still look for ^ on the embark map for volcanoes, but there's no way to search for them in the finder.
You may also be able to use DFhack's prospect feature before embarking to see at what levels (approximately) magma exists on the site. I haven't tried this method myself, but it's the best I can think of right now.
