Caveins
« on: February 23, 2008, 07:51:00 pm »

I had the following situation when the cavein started.  (F=floor, W = wall)

code:

F  F  F
W     W
W     W
WFFFFFW

It ended up like this:

code:

F     F
W     W
W     W
WFF FFW

Why did the floor on the bottom level disappear?

IIRC, if the floor is only one level thick, caveins will smash through it.

regardless, the slime shooter will be completed, come hell or high water, which are both entirely plausible setbacks at this point.

Falling stuff will smash through floors, sometimes more floors than that one little piece of floor ought to fall through, in my opinion.

The floors that seperate z-levels are thin, and cave-ins will punch right through them. Cave-ins will keep going until they hit a layer of solid rock, usually collapsing several levels in the process.

It would be fun to make a huge 1-floor thick tower, then let it smash some nobles below.

For this reason (and to save on construction materials), if you're building a tall tower, it makes sense to offset the walls: walls will stop a cave-in of any size.  Floors will be smashed by a cave-in of any size.
