Destroyed cages
« on: February 28, 2007, 08:27:00 pm »

Simple question, lets just say that I stick a cage containing 20 elephants on the other side of the outdoor river and a swarm of trolls decides to destroy it. Will the elephants pop out, alive and angry or will they all die?

First of all i applaud your success in fitting 20 elephants in one cage.

To answer your question, im not sure whether the elephants will fight the trolls, if by "die" you meant fight.

I've seen cougars and groundhogs walk by each other and not care, on the other hand, i've also seen kobolds and cougars go at it. So i know npcs have the potential to fight, but if it's just wildlife vs wildlife, they probably will ignore each other and now you will have a herd of 20 elephants teamed up with a horde of trolls running about your fortress.....

May God have mercy on your soul...

what if they were tame elephants? war elephants? (I'm not sure if such a thing is possible, I asked here once but never got a response.)

I'm 95% sure that you can't tame elephants normaly but you can change a raw file to make it so you can.

I'm 95% sure you can:
From the code:
[BENIGN][MEANDERER][NATURAL][PET]

Well, make that 100% sure...
You can't train them though, so no war elephants without modding.

I'm also really curious as to what happens to caged animals if the cage is destroyed. I'm to lazy to test it though...

You can indeed tame and breed elephants.
I really should try to fit 10 of them in two cages and link them to a pressure plate in a corridor, like this :
code:

######
###!##
  ^
###!##
######

it may be quite messy  :D

Well, all tame but untrained beasts will run from danger at first. They will fight in self-defense, though.

However, enemies will also try to slaughter your livestock or any other animal if they can. So the idea of releasing several in a confined space is promising, as the beasts can't all get away in time.

The animals in question will have to be hit first before they turns around to defend themselves. It seems advisable to use animals that can still fight back after sustaining a hit. Elephants are perfect, but large cats or bulls should be quite effective as well.
