Computer advice ..
« on: April 06, 2013, 11:44:13 pm »

Well not sure this is the right place for this kind of thread but i might as well try and see if someone can help.

My computer is wayyyy out of date and i was looking for some advice on some parts i could buy and update it , I got about 350 bucks to spend and no idea what to get ..

What i have:
Corsair CX500 Power supply (newish)
GTX460 Graphics card (newish)
Shitty CPU that needs to go
Motherboard as well.
Seagate 500 gig harddrive
3gig of throwaway ram that needs to go.
Windows XP (yea i need 7 ..but its 100 bucks i rather upgrade with)

I kind of want to stick with intel if i can for personal reasons.I been looking up as much as i can about i5s and the ivy bridges but still no idea what i should look for (no i wont overclock)

The computer is strickly for game use , I would really love the ability to play some of the new games coming out soon

a i5 is the greatest for gaming and for 350 you should get able to get a sandy bridge chip, mobo, and 4 gigs of ram easy

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819115234
theres a current 15 dollar off promo for this cpu right now until 4/10

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813130646
good standard motherboard

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231277
4gigs of ram

all of that is 342 dollars. if i were you, use that promo and then buy yourself a cpu heatsink like this one http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835103064
That stock one is noisy and for this one if the fan ever craps out its easy to swap it out with a new one

Now I know you said no Over-clocking, but this website basically sold me everything I've got in my custom built, and they always have these weekly deals that last forever, so I thought you might wanna check this one out: http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=BU-080-OE&groupid=43&catid=2479  I also agree that your GPU will be sucking up loads of power, but I've got a 700Watt PSU that I picked up for £40 from Xcase that handles a 570GTX pretty damn fine.

Ahh yeah, sorry, I forget the majority of the people on this forum don't live in England :P I'm pretty sure the same company have an American branch though...

Actually i never heard of Xcase brand before :P

well lets see, stock 460 blows about 200w under load
the processor being locked at 77w
mobo including memory <100w (honestly they don't burn much but this is what i see)
with hard drive spinning away and any usb crap you are looking around maybe 450w if everything is eating power.
