so.  I'm stuck using a notebook...without any hope of administrator access...and an out-of date antivirus...with a really, really annoying google redirect virus.  but as far as I can tell, it's unable to interfere with the internet in general. This means I can't google stuff like I need to to free up precious, precious RAM.
On top of this, if I want to play dwarf fortress, I'm stuck with a choice between:
a legacy version, which runs really slowly..
Or the recent version which gives me all kinds of keyboard trouble.


I found part of the problem: A process called GIDD.exe is involved, in some way, with my keyboard inputs getting SCRAMBLED.  however, it's only half of the problem-there is anothe program, somewhere, thats doing the scrambling.  GIDD.exe is doing the un-scrambling-which I found out when I closed it out.  But it's only doing so correctly for 90% of the programs. said 90% does NOT include the more recent dwarf fortress versions 

I kill off a couple of things as a matter of habit-like Soffice.bin....

reboot from a AV rescue CD and nuke'em all?
or just format everything and install debian.

edit you can also boot from any live cd, backup all your data (rsync with some --exclude will be helpful) then reinstall vista if you really want to use windows.

I'd also suggest rebooting the entire OS, or, failing that, try running FireFox or Chrome as portable version.

If the scrambling is always the same, maybe you can configure an AutoHotKey script to unscramble it just for the applications you want.

What's the browser? You can get into firefox's controls by typing the address about:config, and search for the text string of where the search is being redirected. delete the offending keys.

Turns out something calld "Constant Guard" is behind all my annoying keyboard troubles.

When I downloaded Norton via Comcast, I also was given something called Constant Guard.  That program put a driver in the file for my wireless keyboard.  Within the hour, I was only able to type NUMBERS --- each and every key on the keyboard typed nothing but numbers!  When I checked the drivers for my keyboard, I noticed a new one from Strikeforce Technologies had been added, an uncertified driver.  I disabled it, and presto!  The keyboard was fine but each time I turned off my computer, and turned it back on, I had to do the same thing.  Since I didnt want to HAVE to do that all the time, I decided to uninstall Constant Guard.  HA!  Getting rid of this mess is like getting all the sand out of a beach house!  Impossible!
NOW Constant Guard, supposedly fulled removed, leaves a message smack in the midde of my screen every 10 seconds or so.  It says that "PROTECTION SUITE: THERE IS A PROBLEM WITH ACCESSING THE LIST OF TRUSTED NETWORK SECURE FINANCIAL INSTITUTIONS. THIS IS BEING UPDATED FOR YOU. PLEASE TRY AGAIN IN A FEW MINUTES .
The notice NEVER goes away.  I can click OK and it will shut but then, in a few seconds, under 10 seconds, it will pop right back up! So I've taken to just leaving it alone, and dragging it down to either lower side, more or less hiding it from everything else.  Makes me wonder WHY Comcast even put this thing on with Norton's software is beyond me. It will NOT let me uninstall either ... I get yet another message saying the uninstall.exe is screwed up.  Looks like I'm stuck with this mess .... til I figure out what's what n how to once and for all.  UNLESS SOMEONE OUT THERE KNOWS HOW TO FIX IT?!  If so pleeeeeease contact me: terryreed@alaska.net ... Seems I was correct when I said bloatware.

I'll definitely do an f12-based reboot as soon as I find a sacrificial usb to use to backup all the user files, and enough relevant installation disks.

Try getting the name of the .exe file that's running, and then go into Windows registry and do a search for that text value, you then set it to null. Failing that, do a search inside the files for the name of the file on your C drive. Hopefully you'll find whatever script or whatever is loading the annoying thing.

you could just go F8 to boot to safe mode and delete the program from existence, for your Admin troubles theres a disc floating out called Hirens, inside theres a miniXP build that has tools to edit the userbase i.e you can change your login credentials to admin. Also how are you able to install if you don't have admin rights?

Can you not download a free antivirus like Comodo Internet Security or Malwarebytes and run a scan?

You could also download autoruns from Microsoft and see all locations that things could be running at startup.

Exact name is Hirens boot CD. Make sure you get a version that fits on a disk. Rogueamp did some videos on it, so I guess you could go there if you need help with it.
