You know what I just thought?

What do you think would make good box-art for Dwarf Fortress? You know, if it had one.

Sorry if it's been done.

I think this'd be frikkin' awesome, especially if it was something similar to the old Megaman Box art. :P

I don't think comedy would sell the game, and the violence wouldn't appeal to kids.
I think it needs to be much more epic. Like, all the cool wallpaper-y things in the art thread, y'know?

Alright, how about an armored axedwarf fighting a forgotten beast beside a magma lake, with pictures of an elephant skeleton, a carp, a badger, and a barrel of dwarven wine in the background. The backdrop will be layers of stone, with a torch planted in the ground between the fighters, and the backdrop fading to black as it gets further from the magma.

That last one looks like it was ripped straight off a dusty old DnD campaign booklet cover. And I think the second one looks more like Dwarf Fortress were it the Power Rangers. And the first one looks like a really good book cover.

The point is that they're all fantastic.

He who plays with dwarves must take care that he does not become a dwarf.  And when you stare into DwarfFort, Dwarffort stares back into you.

Honestly, I've always thought the best boxart would be the icon from the intro scene of a dwarf digging in profile, the one the wiki uses. It's simple, but iconic of the game, and not too flashy visually, which I think is important since the game is not one that focuses on eye-catching graphics, but on gameplay.

But that's not what sells games to new players. It's all about the do', mate.

I think the image and caption here work pretty well.  Sure it's not the sexiest box art around, but it has a certain appeal to a certain kind of player...
