Archery training in DF is rediculous
« on: March 20, 2013, 04:35:58 am »

1) why would someone use stone to build archery target? or even metal? or glass?

2) why would the bolt be consumed away when it hits the target?  oh yes, of course, because it hits a stone target.

3) if my soldiers always practice with tool wood bolts in training.  I don't think they will become elite marksdwarf in real battle,   because    they don't know how to aim with a steel bolt!

won't it be much easier for everyone if bolts just stuck on a grass target made of pig tail? not disappear.
and then we can remove the ammunition view, let marksdwarf pick up bolts just like they pick up other equipments like quiver or boots. and they don't need to care about which bolt is for training and which is for battle.

1. Dwarves.

2. Dwarves.

3. Crossbow is a point and shoot weapon. The bolt is going to go where it's aimed be it wood or metal.

Yeah...it's so ridiculous that it's rediculous.

Besides, making bolts only usable for a specific purpose has its benefits. For example, you can use crappy wooden bolts for training and hunting, and metal bolts when it comes to a real battle.

I like to think that bolts break when they smash against a solid stone target. Or get stuck deep in the target when you shoot them into wood. That mightn't be the best solution to this, but imagination is better than nothing.

if training is very unlikely to break the bolts, then it will make sense to manage bolts in the equipment UI, not the ammunition UI
you can assign metal bolts to a squad just like assign metal helm

Oh, yeah, I get what you're saying now. That would indeed be useful.

On the archery target thing...
As someone who's fired a (very weak compared to historical military versions) crossbow, wood targets don't really help. With bows something soft can cover the target or wood can be used, but with crossbows you splinter wooden targets after a dozen shots. I used metal bolts; wood bolts would probably have broken on the target.

Basically, with Crossbows, your choices are break the arrow or break the target. Your choice.

Let's just say that a wooden archery target in DF is a 1 sq. meter wooden block covered in 30 cm of padding.

A one square meter block covered in screaming elves.

Fixed it.

It is probably why proper targets are usually not made of wood. They are made of straw.

Pfft... elves, padding. What's the difference?

Padding is slightly useful.

Also if padding somehow murdered you in battle it wouldn't attempt to consume your corpse.

Elves are not superfluous text to increase the length of books?

*looks at forum title*
*looks at DF general Discussion*

What, did you expect a different outcome?
