A few questions about Fishing and Patrols
« on: March 16, 2013, 04:20:57 pm »

Alright, I yesterday I started a fortress, and now that I've set it up rather decently, I'd like some advice/help  I can't seem how to figure out how to make my Militia/Fortress Guard patrol the halls of my Fortress to make sure that those filthy Skulking Kobolds don't get into my stockpiles. I've got a bridge that requires one to be a flyer to enter the fortress when it is Retracted, (To help make it so that the Goblins won't be able to enter without my permission, and to check to see if any Migrants are Vampires) and various other defenses, but I don't have any decent defense against Kobolds, and I can't afford to lock down the Fort constantly, because one fifth of the food my fortress survives on comes from hunting the local wildlife.  But I Digress... How do I make it so my Guards Patrol? I set them to patrol on their activity, but I read somewhere that you have to put it so that they patrol from one point to another. Is it Possible to have multiple points for them to patrol? Like say, from the Entrance to the Living Quarters, to the Cave Entrance, and then all the way back to the Workshops and Stockpiles?

And for my second question... if I dig into the side of a river and have it enter into the fortress via tunnel, and I put grates over the exposed part so that no Gators/Crocs/Giant Toad/Carp/Zombie!Carp can get into my fortress, will the fishermen be able to fish from it? Or because it isn't the river proper, are they unable to fish from it? Also, how do I catch Cave Lobster? I know you need a trap, but how often do lobsters go out of the underground lake and onto the traps?

If you only have the one entrance, just stationing them there will work, as will putting various pets there. otherwise, if you want patrols.... yes.

Go to (N)otes and place your points. Then I believe you go to the (r)outes sub-menu and (a)dd those points to a route, in the order that you want patrolled. In your scheduling menu you can set up a patrol route (o)rder.

as for fishing, vermin fish appear everywhere that there is water. for bigger fish you need cage traps. Go check out Sphalerite's threads for tips about that. As for lobster.... i dunno about them.

You seem to be under the impression that we're playing some game other than dwarf fortress. It doesn't matter how powerful you make a creature, we will find a way to destroy it. God is dead, and Urist killed him.

cave fish/lobsters currently don't appear. something to consider with the river plan is to make sure you can close your channel/canal, just in case something goes wrong.

Raising bridges are usually better at keeping things out than retracting bridges, also because archers can't fire over it without line of sight, while a retracting bridge leaves LoS

as for patrols, just relocate the barracks to the first thing anyone needs to get through after the entry hallway.

Make an effort to get all or most of your needs met inside your safe areas, you don't want to starve when a siege prevents your hunters from hunting. Hunting and fishing are not long-term sustainable

cave fish/lobsters currently don't appear.

Then how come I can start with them? I know Purring Maggots don't appear for the most part (I've never seen one, and I've played for Three years(Without learning how to set up patrols, haha...) And I never see Dwarven Cheese because of it.

it's a bug. Your home civilization has them, because dwarven civs have them, but your fishers won't catch them in the caverns, no matter how hard they try. The wiki says "little to no cave lobsters" (or cave fish). I've never been able to catch any. I havn't read about anyone catching any and yes, the topic comes up every once in a while, but who knows, maybe you get lucky.

edit:
okay, the wiki says "few or no cave lobsters to actually be found"...
