Average Goblin Skills/Equipment
« on: March 14, 2013, 01:37:30 pm »

I have experienced goblin ambushes, but not sieges. I've died several times to goblins in adventure mode though. I'm trying to know what I will be up against so I can test in arena, so what is the average skill level of the regular goblins, and the master goblins? Also, just because I haven't experienced sieges fully yet, do the master goblins usually have masterwork stuff, or just general high quality, but not masterwork?

I know the masters sometimes have gear decorated with the emblem of their civilization, but I don't think it's particularly good quality.

I can confirm they got some masterworks, but I am yet to see one that is useful. They carry a lot of masterwork cloaks, socks, bone amulets and mittens.

Depends on the civilization. The big ones tend to show up with goblinite armour on every goblin, with the leaders decked out in masterwork iron and all the others at least having copper and silver caps/mail shirts. Smaller ones tend to just show up with caps, but in general the masters are always decked out. Hard to know how skilled they are too. My best advice would be to fight actual sieges not knowing what to expect - you learn much more quickly. Learn what to expect from your Dwarves and you can expect how others will fare against them.

My main problem was that the first time I dealt with an ambush, I was fortunate and it was with caravan guards from the dwarves (ironically I pissed off the traders by making deals that were not satisfactory, though they had a 5000 db profit margin) that I survived. Before and afterwards I had a steady stream of goblin thieves come in, along with several kobolds. One of them just waltzed in, murdered a baby, waltzed out without touching a thing. My obese dwarves, even without armor, can't catch up to these things. My marksdwarves? They keep on putting up their equipment. My marksdwarf was RIGHT next to the snatcher, but it just stopped to go and grab its equipment. Do I specifically need to have my dwarves on station all the time, just to keep them equipped? This is the reason I was worried, my 9 dwarves barely can get a goblin snatcher, much less an ambush. Siege? Yeah, I was wondering what I would be up against. How can I train dwarves not to be so darn slow? The melee dwarves are good in combat, average of skilled to talented in skills, one of them is actually pretty highly skilled, but still chubby and slow. Then I have my semi-retarded marksdwarves, about half of them elite marksdwarves, really good but they just never have equipment. I am currently producing armor from my great armorsmith, and although I have thousands of magnetite ore, hundreds of iron bars, 50~ pig iron bars, I only have roughly 5 steel bars. My flux is all over the place, and my furnace operator loves grabbing the one farthest away, instead of right next to him. Finally, how do I get my dorfs to spar? They just sit in a corner doing 'Individual Combat Drills'. I have about 8 of them, 3 at a time in there just sitting in a corner, supposedly training skills. Does this even train attributes at all? Would I be better off throwing them in the caverns or sicking them on local wildlife, or just being boring and letting them fondle their weapons in the barracks?

1. Set up a stone stockpile next to your smelter that accepts only "Economic" stone. Set it to use three wheelbarrows (and make sure you have three extra for it, you can build them at the carpenter's shop).
2. Fix up your military schedules. Press 'm' -> 's' to get to the Schedule screen, then make sure you're on the "Active/Training" schedule. Press 'x' to clear the default (Train, Minimum 10) and then 'o' to Add Order. Cycle through until you get back to "Train," then press +/- to get to "2 minimum" and Shift+Enter to accept. Do that four more times so you have five "Train, Minimum 2" orders, then 'c'opy and 'p'aste that onto each month. Then make sure to set your squad(s) to the Active/Training schedule; either through 'a'lerts on the military screen or by pressing 't' on the squads screen, with the appropriate squad selected.

Children you rescue shouldn't behave like rabid beasts.  I guess your regular companions shouldn't act like rabid beasts either.
I think that's a little more impossible than I'm likely to have time for.
