Embarking on a cavern?
« on: March 12, 2013, 09:16:41 pm »

So for various reasons I want to embark on a site that has an above ground cavern entrance. Is there any way I can go about quickly finding an embark site featuring an above ground cavern entrance?

The only times you get access to the caverns from above ground is in bugged sites. It should never happen on a normal site (with the exception of volcanos).

It would be brutally difficult and probably won't work. In other words, it's absolutely dwarven!

Aren't there supposed to be caves, which connect to the caverns?

Caves may indeed connect to the caverns (Forgot about that, usually don't play on caves :P). If so you can turn cave visibility on in world generation (though embarking on a cave might bring you into contact with all sorts of unpleasant inhabitants.

I think that was the point. :P

The easiest way to guarantee an embark that contains a cave with underground linkage (as opposed to those pitiful excuses for caves that house ettins and the like) is to turn off megabeast and semi-megabeast caves in advanced worldgen parameters, increase the number of non-mountain caves, and turn on cave visibility. Then look for a cave and presto. Troglodytes.

You can also check out the cave in Legends mode.

I am trying to make chickens lay bees as eggs. So far it only produces a single "Tame Small Creature" when a hen lays bees.
Honestly at the time, I didn't see what could go wrong with crowding 80 military Dwarves into a small room with a necromancer for the purpose of making bacon.

Yep, easy to do. Reduce the number of Z-Levels, increase caves...

try this.
Spoiler: many caves worldgen (click to show/hide)
First random embark I tried had a path from the surface to the first cavern layer.

Also...
Civilized World Population

   639 Dwarves
   30400 Goblins
   707 Kobolds

   Total: 31746

You can also increase the sizes of the caves. The default for cave max size is only like 25-50, but they go all of the way up to 500.
