Legend of Dungeon - Retro action roguelike, 4-player coop
« on: March 12, 2013, 06:41:06 pm »

Website: http://robotloveskitty.com/LoD/index.html
RPS coverage: http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/tag/legend-of-dungeon/

Features (from the page):
  • 1 to 4 Player Cooperative Gameplay
  • Real Time Beat'em'up Combat
  • Permadeath
  • Dynamic Lighting and Real-Time Shadows ...on Pixel Art!
  • Dynamic Music
  • Randomized Content
  • Online Score Board
  • DRM Free

So I saw this game a while back on Kickstarter and didn't pay it much mind. The feature list kind of indicates that it's more or less you're bog-standard action roguelike.

I only felt driven to post about it after an RPS article on the game's dynamic music. It's so good, give it a listen. I freely admit I'm a sucker for good game music, even if the awesomeness of the game itself is in question.

While it seems to be a light-weight title, and I find the dynamically lit pixel art they're so proud of muddy and hard to read...between the music and the level design, there's something undeniably charming about it to me. With 4-player co-op I think it'll deliver fun where its limitations might otherwise prevent it from doing so.

The game is about to head into alpha "soon." There was a demo up at one point but it seems like they've taken it down since. I think I've committed to buy it if for nothing else than the soundtrack, but I'd be thrilled if it turns out have some real meat on its bones, like a Realm of the Mad Gods with actual depth.

Its kinda silly to complain that a friendly NPC isn't a well designed boss fight.

It's like TowerClimb with all the unnecessary graphical effects. Otherwise looks good, though.

I don't really object to the visuals until it's very dark and there's tons of light being generated. Then I feel like I'm having a seizure. It looks quite nice otherwise.
