Animals
« on: March 09, 2013, 05:34:40 pm »

So I have a pretty good grasp on the basics of dwarf fortress and I finally found a joyous wilds and decided to embark there. I found some aquifers but worked around them. My question is how can I let animals roam freely around the fortress? I have a tame fluffy wambler and tame tree frog and It would be pretty cool to see them roam around. right now I have them in a cage. Can I let them out or is it impossible?

But is there a manual way to let them out of the cage?

If I recall correctly, those are vermin type animals. Those are a bit problematic. You might be able to get them into a cage (regular cage), link it to a lever and release them that way

I never thought of that. It's genius! except then I'll lose my fairy and dragonflies. oh well can't hinder progress.

vermin don't actually stay on the map or even in rooms if you release them.  Vermin dissappear almost insantly once the cage is opened up, you might see them flicker onto the area once or twice but then they are gone.  The best you can do is allow them to be adoptable and occasionally someone will adopt them and they will get carried around in thier pockets.

Got it. maybe the fluffy wambler will be adopted. after all, it's a colossus killer.

No they won't believe me, tamed vermin dissappear after awhile.  On the other hand that works for other tamed animals.

guy, they disapear cause it's the vermin behavior, they do disapear, but if you pay enough attention they will flicker in the screen, it is normal for vermins, try to find them using the units menu under animals...

A tame vermin creature will still get mauled by the first cat which chances upon it.

The only vermin creatures i've ever bothered to release are web-spinning spiders, and if you release them into a room with animal-impassable doors, they can provide webs for your textile industry for years. They don't simply disappear.

i remember dumping a snail off a cliff and it stayed there for years,

hmm, a thought.. do vermin type animals reveal map, say, if i were to dump a tame fluffy wambler into a cavern, would that reveal anything?

edit: be VERY careful with flying vermin, or flying pets in general, when it comes to adoption. having one adopted can cause a LOT of "Urist McPetOwner cancels retrieve pet, animal inaccessible"

i have one fort where some potash maker adopted a bat, and the announcement log is nearly useless, as 3/4 of it is "... animal inaccessible"

very close to killing that idiot just to get to use that announcment list again
