Is it safe to go back?
« on: March 09, 2013, 02:31:43 am »

Hey everyone. I've been off the DF for some time because bugs in the then-current release annoyed me too much. Today I've woken up with a powerful urge to build an underground fort, though. Question is, is it safe to do so or will I be annoyed an run away again?

Things that bothered me the most were hospitals not working, squad equipment working weirdly, unavailability of crystal glass, also that part in the wiki that said barons and other nobility are currently a no-show (really wanted to see that stuff).

So, is this stuff fixed in a current release? Also, were there any extra annoying bugs introduced?

Barons definitely work now, and have ever since at least .31.25.  They don't arrive as migrants: you appoint a dwarf once your fort gets large enough.

Hospitals still have buggy behavior with storing supplies, but I believe Toady fixed the bug where they raid caravans.  Military equipment can still be annoying to work with, but setting a uniform to replace clothing instead of being worn over it will almost always fix problems with this.  I'm not sure about crystal glass.

Some other bugs have been fixed though.  Dwarves will claim and dispose of clothing as it wears, and you now have to provide clothing else they get a lot of unhappy thoughts.  Several new features have also been introduced, like minecarts and hauling with bins.  The hauling update has its own quirks though.

...maybe some of the nobles, and maybe some parts of the hospitals.
I'm pretty sure the equipment works "properly", but you'd have to ask someone that knows. Crystal glass, I'm pretty sure is still unavailable, and parts of hospitals and nobility are definitely still glitched. And the Minecart Goblin Grinder is a new bug/exploit.

But if you let these bugs annoy you, then I'm afraid you're out of luck.

I only started playing with the current version, so i didn't even know there was some previous bug with the fancier glass types. That one's definitely been plugged: you can make crystal glass now (needs _rough_, not cut gems, just in case), you can cut and encrust with it, and rough crystal (and clear and green) glass is commonly brought by human and dwarven caravans.

Rock crystals have always (?) been rather rare. I have seen them recently, although I didn't have a glassmaker so I didn't try making crystal glass.

Hospitals actually work now, they just steal too much cloth.

Guy don't worry about the bugs, in truth, they're features, the game is in constant development and the bugs will be there anyway, don't let that freakish roaches, ants and their human cavernous conterpart make you loss the Better Game of This Era.

Hospitals work pretty well in the current version.

Regarding military equipment bugs, make sure to disallow hunting, mining and woodcutting for your military dwarves and set the uniform to 'replace clothing'.

Dunno about glass because I don't use it.

Either don't put the container in the hospital zone, or change the settings so they never stock their own cloth and thread.

Glass is awesome. It makes the acquisition of Magma beyond simple since it's 100% guaranteed the pumps, doors and flood gates are magma safe. True, it's a bit awkward to start because you want a backlog of sandbags, but once you have that, just set the furnace to (make glass, gather sand) it'll run as long as you have fuel, because there will always be a sand break between jobs.

The question was about crystal glass.

To the OP, find the "fixed" exe.
There's an exe file floating around which has HEX value tweaked, which fixes many df bugs:
- Long patrol duty thoughts accumulate from all squad orders, including training
- Dwarven caravan brought silver crossbow, ITEMS_WEAPON_RANGED ignored in world gen
- Vermin can only escape from artifact animal traps
- Fish in aquariums interfere with vermin behavior checks
- Military dwarves turn off all of their labors when becoming heroes
- Diplomats don't bring bodyguards
- Deconstructing walls teleport material to location

I am sure it's included in my Genesis Reborn mod, it's also in Modest Mod for sure. If you don't want to look for the original upload, download any of these mods and replace .exe in your folder with the one from the mod.
