will this water source cause fun?
« on: March 10, 2013, 02:35:08 pm »

i came up with (what i thought) was a good idea for water and what i did was i channeled a nearby river into a room in the fort that goes down 3 Z levels in a 3x4 Up/Down staircase and then leads to a 1 z level 41x50 reservoir room and the idea is that when my dwarves want water they go to that room so we are safe if sieged... will this work or will death occur?

Yea it should work as long as you do it right. IDK how much you have dealt with water before but just be sure that its all clear of dwarves when you start filling.

Your best bet would be to make a well that dips into your water. Though be careful when filling your water so that it doesn't flood your fortress through your well.

If this doesn't cause flooding, then I'll be mightily impressed.

One important note (if you haven't done it already). Build a fortification in the tunnel that leads to the reservoir. This should prevent any aquatic-based !!fun!! from entering through it (like some titans and occasionally some invader mounts).

You mentioned going down some levels, which means the water will be pressurized.  You know about water pressure?  if you leave the connection to the river open when you crack into the resourvoir you can flood everything below the river's level.

you can dissipate pressure by using diagonal pipes, or by hooking a floodgate or other device to shut off the connection to the river.  it is explained more on the wiki.

oh no we dont actually get water from the reservoir, there is like a spiral systen and a drinking platform just where the water enters the fort.

Let me get this straight.

[Room]~~~~~~~~~~~~~||Where: ~ denotes a river/water tile
<~>||And rooms marked in brackets
<~>||represent rooms of indeterminate size
<~~~~[SafeRoom Reservoir]

Going along with smakemupagus, yes, you're in trouble if that river is wholly connected to that reservoir. One is, water will fill up until its base level - that is, the river. As river water is indefinite (from the map :/), and if you don't block it, it will keep on filling until the water is at the same level as its source. The same z level as the river. The reservoir will get filled no matter what you do unless you attempt any control methods.

You could just go with a moat as an alternative or a closed bridge. :P

You should always build some means for interrupting the water inflow as close to the water source as possible (in your case the river), i.e. floodgates or raising bridges (if accessible from the outside, thinking of building destroyers). Put the corresponding lever in a safe space far away so that your are always able to stop the water. And yes, de-pressurizing by diagonal pipes is the first step to survival.
So even if you accidentally flood parts of the fort, being able to switch the water off will make the difference between the greatest fun and a simple drying and cleaning job. Maybe you can even test the off switch before you connect everything to your main fort.
There is so much that can go wrong with plumbing that you shouldn't take any risk.

Actually once a fortification is 7/7 in liquids then anything that can swim can go through it just fine.

To protect against everything there is really only one reliable way that protects against 100% of all problems from getting in.

X = wall
≈ = water
W = well
# = grate

Side view
Prior to water flow
Code: [Select]
X≈≈≈XXW
XX XXX X
XX XXX#X
XX     X
XXXXXXXX

After water flow
Code: [Select]
X≈≈≈XXW
XX≈XXX≈X
XX≈XXX#X
XX≈≈≈≈≈X
XXXXXXXX

Because building destroyers cannot destroy things above them, the only true safe water source is to use pressure to drive the water up through a floor grate with pressure and then access it there.

And on the topic of pressure, there are a few simple rules.
0)Magma never rises unless driven through a pump, when it will follow Rule #1.
1)Water driven through pumps will attempt to rise to the same level as the pump outlet.
2)Damned rivers function identical to pump driven water on their level.
3)Water from water sources will attempt to rise to the same level as the source.
3b)If sourced water goes through a u-bend (as seen in the design above) it will attempt to rise to 1 z-level below the source (as opposed to the source level).
4)If water goes through a diagonal connection then it is treated as sourced water with the source on the same level as the diagonal connection. This will transform pumped water into sourced water.
