How to Succession Forts?
« on: March 01, 2013, 08:46:40 pm »

What is the method for making and running community succession forts? i.e. is it:

I generate a fort
Define the terms
Define the time for each turn
Then what? Or if not, how does it go?

Is this freshwater or saltwater? Because alternatively you could breed a large amount of crocodiles and unleash them into the waters... indirect genocide.

Also, remember to turn over the save to the next player, at least after your post/entry in the thread/write up.

As good advice, try to generate a relatively small world with relatively short history to limit the download size (~50mb is where it becomes cumbersome to upload/download).  The first post has to grab people with a novel idea so they want to be part of your succession.  Lots of information and pictures help.  Sometimes the embark screen for a few suitable locations are posted along with a poll (which is later removed) asking for community input for where to embark first.

Remember that if you start a succession game, you're responsible for it.  As  long as it is running, you should be prepared to check up on the thread every day if possible.  Make sure the save gets uploaded, and downloaded on schedule.  Try to let people know when their turn is upcoming.  You will sometimes need to (gently) urge people to hurry and finish their turn on time.  You will sometimes need to skip people who leave the forums unexpectedly.  You may have times when the fort is in nobody's hands for a while because a sequence of people didn't show up.  Be prepared for this.

This sounds like a lot of work and it can be, but mostly you'll be having fun reading people's experiences, and watching the fort grow in unexpected ways.  Best of luck!

(most of this is common sense but bears saying)
